Fellow Magna dudes,

I have just put a K & N Pod Filter on my 3.0L TF and seem to be having a little backfiring when cold. I understand greater airflow is not welcome when the engine is cold but just wandering if there is a quick tuning fix for the problem or if the car should be tuned after the mod.

Exhaust has also been altered, disposing of the original muffler and replacing it with a stainless 3Aracing hi flow muffler (Good note).

Any tips would be appreciated. Can anybody suggest a good tuning mob in perth south of the river?

Jez

It is a K & N Pod Filter. Swirling or not, I don't know but I have attached some photos (that's if it worked). I can live with the problem but I have a wife who has a tendency to inform me when she isn't happy with the way the car is running. I told her that lowering the car should fix the problem, but she didn't believe me.

Hahahahhahah, damn, that was a nice try though.

I've heard reports on this forum (how true I'm not sure), that the POD filter interferes with the MAS sensor on the Magnas. Apparently you need the Oval K&N filter to be compatible. Not sure how this would hold true but then again, you never know. An incorrect reading and consequently an inappropriate fuel to air ratio may be the cause of your problem.

maybe try the old filter and box back for a few days and see how it goes? then ull know if its the MAS senser

Yeah stay away from those air-swirling pod filters, the magna air sensors really don't like them, as they need air to be running straight through them to be able to correctly read and monitor the amout of air flowing through. Thats why either an oval filter or replacement panel filter are the only options when it comes to after market air-filters.

man, i can tekll yah exactly what is wrong and how to fix...
well i had the exact same problem as ur having, little bit of back fire and stuff
right after i had the same problem putting my pod and my new exhuast system, me and my mate (mitsubishi mechanic) found the problem, change ur spark plugs and lead, then adjust ur timing, for some reason, the normal stock airfilter, gives the engine more room for the timing to go out and stuff, because of the restricted air. who knows why, but it has eomthing to do with more airflow through the engione, less allowing the less movement in the timing....well that should defintely fix the problem....it took us a week to figure it out , but hey, thats just piece of advice....ive worked on my magna, pulled out the whole block and al;l apart and back to gether... but killbilly, should be able to back me up, hes taught me a bit of a magna through all his posts....

how do you adjust the timing on the v6's

i swear that honeycomb stuff before the MAS is supposed to stop the air from swirling.

Hmm... is this a trick question? I mean, on 3rd gen cars it has to be done via EMS or piggyback upgrade.

It is, but it's probably fine with the small amount of swirling cause be a paper or replacement filter. A pod however could swrrl it more than the honeycomb could straighten.

was it tuned length intake piping? if it wasn't then it will not help one bit. the little pod like things that bolt to the intake plastic are there to increase volume so i imagine it has a fair impact on the cars performance. try increase or decrease the volume of the piping
