View Full Version : RPW Shit.
Hay all
I braught some RPW race spec extractors about 5 months ago they are looking pritty average they are starting to slowely rust and have already welded a big spot of piping on them. So ive got a couple of options get the shits at RPW and theyll probably do nothing. Or buy a set of HM headers witch have simliar primeries as the rpw extractors sent to my door for $534 with the flex pipe. Or pacemaker but they dont have the longer primeries witch help top end power as the other too. Wat are everyones thoughts.?

AFAIK, the HM headers are the same as the genuine ralliart ones.

RPW headers come out of an Exhaust shop in Sydney.. I brought some from there cheap as many years ago.:)
There is nothing really bad about the RPW headers performance wise, If they look tacky get them coated and they will look good. It will cost less than $500 that you would be spending on new pipes.

why dont you take them off and spray them will kill rust aerosole, then wrap them in fibreglass/heat wrap, double bonus?

I had a similar problem with my RPW extractors, the blue coating was flaking away and rust spots were starting to appear.
So I sanded & cleaned them as best I could without removing them from the car, and sprayed them with 3 or 4 coats of 3M Heat Proof Paint.
I used the Aluminium colour.
IIRC about $20 from SCA, see here: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/3M-Heat-Proof-Aluminium.aspx?pid=220368#Description
No more rust & they look way better, I give them a touch up every couple of months or when I'm mucking about under the car with something like an oil change.

Hmm, heatproof paint seems a bit iffy, I mean exhaust gas is FRICKIN hot.
Are they rated to be able to handle that kinda heat?
Kill rust spray is interesting, might have to give mine a coat before they go on the car.

most heat proof paint is designed to take 400C or more

Well the stuff I use (see earlier post) is rated to 650 degrees centigrade (= 1202 degrees fahrenheit), and the can says it is suitable for radiators, exhaust systems, pot belly stoves and barbecues. So I think it can handle extractor heat and I haven't had any problems with it so far.

Interesting, thanks for the tip.
Think I'll sand the blue paint off and give it 2 coats of that paint and killrust on top.

Yep, in hindsight (ain't that a wunnerful thing!) I prolly should have coughed up the extra $300 to get ceramic coated extractors.
To get mine ceramic coated now would cost $500+, including labour to remove and refit them.
So I've cheaped out on a $20 can of paint instead!

it will cost $300 to get them coated if you walk in with them in your hand.

Hence my estimate of $500+ including labour to remove and refit them. Well at least for mine because they have two angle brackets welded to them to stop them rattling against each other, and that would cost a bit extra to sort out. Best to get them coated before fitting.

Probably no need to sand.....mine just wiped off with some thinners.

in Feb last year it cost me 480+gst to get a set of rpw 380 ones coated in the shops top of the range black coating.. 320 only would have gotten the slightly less effective chrome finish
