Hi Guys,
I Recently Bought a Sports Magna not too long ago with a "Dud" Gearbox, after further investigation i put oil in, as it was dry as a bone, the car moved in all gears and i was able to take it for a quick spin round the block....HOWEVER, The Drivers side Driveshaft seal seemed to be pissing out transmission fluid (this being the reason for the gearbox being empty in the first place) SO i purchased a brand new seal from Mitsubishi in Camillia near parramatta yesterday, it is the right part....

BUT.
i jacked the car up, took both front wheels off, sat it down on stands and had a crab crawl underneath....
This is what i came to....

When i moved the rotor while under the car, the shaft going into the gearbox either moved up or down depending which way i was moving the rotor, this was the same for both sides, however only one side was leaking (Driver side, Which i have a new seal for)
The drivers side did not move as bad as the passengers side, But i really dont think this is normal?? (So in other words, both sides of the gearbox had play...)

I Need some opinions guys, before i bother to pull out the shaft and put this seal in i may be wasting my time? Time for a new gearbox? :S

So this is the car bought with a broken gearbox? The original owner was right, if the housing of the inner joint of the shafts have lateral play the gearbox needs to be opened up to see what went wrong with the differential. It might be a cheap fix. Don't bother just putting the new seal in, it will leak just as much - the gearbox needs to come out to see what is wrong.

In a healthy gearbox, the shafts rotate, they don't move up or down (at least the housing of the inner joint doesn't, the rest of the shaft moves about to allow for wheel travel, but as you have it up in the air, there should be no up or down sloppiness anywhere).

Ask the original owner what he was doing when the gearbox went. lol

Might just be the drive shafts themselves, pull them out and test the joints for play. Do that first.
