Ignition timing? Earth the connector on the firewall (round connector, not the flat one - that's for testing the fuel pump, and goes to battery positive) and use a timing light. Loosen the distributor nut and move the distributor until it is set correctly. Pays to clean the marks on the timing cover and pulley first though, and dab some liquid paper on the marks. 5 degrees before top dead centre, you are aiming for, but check the manual. 4 cylinder and V6 are pretty much the same method.

From manual:
4 cylinder = 5 degrees BTDC plus or minus half a degree.
6 cylinder = 5 degrees BTDC plus or minus 2 degrees.

While running remove the earth connection and the timing should advance to 13 degrees +/- 2 BTDC for the 4 cylinder or 15 +/- 2 BTDC for the V6.

they have a habit of slipping on the rubber ring

check the timing pully for oil soaked rubber ring slippage

Thanks everyone, you wont believe it, she had ran outta fuel while we were trying to set it and i hadn't noticed!! I wondered why we had done everything right and it still would not work! Put $10 fuel in and its firing now, just seems to be missing, i'm going to try a new set of plugs and leads tomorrow, hopefully that helps!

NOPE, didnt help, but my friend did not ground the round plug as i have been told to do by so many people, he just set it to 13 degree BTDC and it is running but very roughly. Does anyone with the right knowledge have ANY time they can spare to give me a hand?? - I dont have my own timing light. I can spare a few beers and a BBQ or a couple of bucks, but need my car on road asap :( I'm home 24hrs a day so anytime that suits you suits me :P

An easy way (well for me) was to remove number one spark plug, to turn the motor over by hand until the piston was up the top (TDC) and then remove the distrubuter cap and pull the distrubuter out and line the rotor button up to the corresponding spark plug. Put it all back together and adjust it to the specs on the label under the bonnet.
The rough running could be caused by the 4 pin distrubuter plug building up corrosion.
Hope this helps

Thankyou everyone, i have fixed the problem, it was a faulty plug on the air cleaner (the one going to the sensors) i replaced that, re-set the timing as above ~Thankyou~ and its running like a dream!
