Hey all,

I had a bit of a search but couldn't find anything, wasn't really sure what to search for though.

I have a 2000 tj auto. I did a transsmission flush 10 days ago and the transmission has been happy since. I was driving the car for the first time in 2 days, it's been raining and a bit cool, and I noticed the d light in the cluster wasn't working. All other lights were working fine.

Then I went round a roundabout, got a bit of understeer, started on the throttle leaving the roundabout and got a MASSIVE flare before the gearbox roughly grabbed a gear.

Are these two events independent or is the failed d light some sort of warning? I'll probably do a gbox reset soon, but figured i'd ask first.

Cheers in advance!

pretty sure the d light is just a globe that needs replacing, mine is the same altho i dont have gearbox problems

My first response would be to check the transmission fluid level for over or under fill.

ive had these problems, my "d" light wasent working when i got my car and havent been worried about changing it (less light in ya face at night). as for grabbing gears, if your fuel consumption is high, 13L/100km the gears will respond alot quicker then if its at 10.8-11.5/100km, its very noticable, i get this alot when the car in going uphill with 5 big guys in it. maby time for new tyres possibaly?

Thanks for the replies guys.

What are the consequences of overfilling as I feel I've probably done this?

Tyres are pretty much new. Sorry maybe I'm missing the link here, what does fuel consumption have to do with the transmission?

If you've been giving the car some balls or reasonable hills driving the gears will change alot quicker when you put the throttle on, if you drive granny style for a bit then when you go and put your foot down the gears wont last as long and will change as normal. When I go up a long will at 80kmh in 3rd, when I get tO the top and go downhill, the car stays in 3rd, then the rpm gOes up to 4K then shunts into 4th gear.

Never heard Of it doing it around a roundabout, only up hills

Could also try a ecu reset as I know that TF onwards learns the way u drive. That means if you are hard on the accelerator all the tome then someone who is light on it drives it, it will slam the gear in hard.

Basically dad got a reset done on his by mitsi. Cost like $200. We later worked out to do it, you can just disconnect the negative on your battery for half hour or so :)

Overfilling the gearbox with automatic transmission fluid will cause symptoms of flaring and rough changes.

How do you get understeer at a roundabout going normal speed?

Overfilling can cause foaming and aerate the oil which then becomes compressible....this makes the valve body and clutch servos and in a way they were not designed for.

Ok so I'll drain some fluid and carefully make sure it's on the level, then do a gearbox reset. There's a sticky on here somewhere, I think i bookmarked it.

How do you understeer in normal driving? It's easy, add a bunch of rain, slightly underestimating a roundabout and a sh!t part of road and the front end becomes destabilised. You can either panic and brake or ease off the throttle, in my case it wasn't much understeer at all, so it barely dragged me off line, and the understeering process slowed the car down that <5km/h needed to make the corner on line.

Lol the understeer didn't even wake the passengers up, it was the car revving to 3-4k then slamming a gear that did it.

Thanks for the help guys, will let you know the result. Now to look as changing the light's in the cluster

And in case anyone's looking for a diy on cluster bulbs after reading this
