im wondering what engine oils people use in their magnas and what viscosity? im going to do an oil change, and was wondering what other are happy with and are not happy with? mines a 3.0 te on LPG (with a newer 3.0 engine with the lpg stamped heads) and i run it on gas nearly all the time.

i usually use motul or royal purple in my gto, but im not spending $100 for oil in the magna ;)

I need to know nearly the exact same thing haha.

The people who owned the car before me were using this - http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/motor-oil/hpr/hpr_gas - maybe that'd suit your car?

Most people on here would recommend Penrite.

Myself I don't personally like Penrite due to a few issues myself and a mate had with it. I run Valvoline Semi Syn 15w-40 Engine Armour its excellent.

The engine run pretty happy with the Magna-tec, and i didn't have any probs with it in 2 years plus after 10.000km the oil is still brown-clear ish (mybe that is because i replace the oil at max every 10000km too)

Two things make an oil go dark over time, the oil degrading, and the oil cleaning all the sooty crap from the engine. Magnatec clearly is not doing this, which is one of the most important roles of a good oil.

Magnatec's whole theory means that it abandons the engine cleaning properties that better oils have.

Magnatec is horseshit. I had issues with Penrite making ticking noises (did it to my Festiva and now the Magna). Running Mobil 1 5w-50 in mine now and no complaints. Its the cheapest proper synthetic oil (Penrite, Castrol and others run a lower grade base fluid which is shitty).

Also the massive viscosity range in Penrite oils is because of heaps of friction modifying polymers. When the polymers break down or shear under heavy load the oil loses its protective properties.

Sorry, have to agree to disagree, I used to use Penrite in my Turbo Rotaries and if anything will kill one they will

Also, many mits dealers use Penrite for all the service work

If you are getting ticking lash adjusters it is not the oil, there are other issues where the thinner crap oils will bleed better but not lubricate as well. The base of the Penrite is nothing like Castrol and even a lot of competition cars who advertise other brands still use the Penrite

Mobil1 is reasonable, I prefer teh Penrite but then have used it for over 20 years lol

Another thing that mal kinda alluded to there is that just because your engine makes some noise on one particular oil, doesn't mean it's the oil. So you might change to a worse oil that masks the sound, possibly making it worse.

It's like those horror stories of people who buy performance cars only to find the previous owner had put very thick oil in to mask sounds, soon after the engine goes bang.

Castrol Edge 5-30w, fully syn. I like it, good economy, Engine runs fairly quiet (although my engine has adjustable ,. 2 part tappets) , and no smoke. use very little between fills. The engine gets revved to redline (7400rpm) fairly often and it sounds good, used the Edge for a few years now and hasnt let me down. Also Did use the Valvoline VR1 racing 10-40w semi syn, was quite good, engine not as quiet but good.

Hey guys,

Im trying to decided between Penrite SIN0 (0W-50) or SIN5 (5W-60). Has anyone had any experience with SIN0 as it is the oil recommended on the Penrite website for the KJ verada?

I am aware that our climate in Aus makes 0W unecessary, but I am happy to use it regardless however I am unsure if using it will having any negative impacts on warm up protection my 02 KJ GTV as it is now approching 155,000kms.

Naturally with the higher millage I would opt for 10W+ but I want to try Penrites SIN range only problem is the high viscosity at temp with SIN5 (5W-60) and SIN10 (10W-70!!) leaves me reluctant to and worried itll be to thick. Any thoughts?

2002 KJ Verada GTV - 155,000kms

Penrite:
SIN0 0W-50
SIN5 5W-60
SIN10 10W-70

Ive looked into other oils too but just want to know specifically about Penrite SIN range at the moment. Any help thanks :)

To be honest, stick with the Syn5, the Syn0 will tend to be too thin in any Mits engine, the J series with the #6 cams are noisy enough as they are, the syn0 or the other syn oils from Mobil etc have the same effect. I use personally the Syn5 in my engines

Mileage really does not make much of a difference, if it is burning too much oil using the recommended oil, the going up grades will generally no help much.

Thanks heaps mad.

I'll give sin5 a go. Penrites full syn everyday 10W-40 did cross my mind at some stage but no one seems to have even considered it an i heard positive comments on SIN.

Oh also thanks for the tip on wether or not the car has high milage. Just as well my cars engine is in tip top condition seems to have been taken care of very well by the previous owner so no noticable oil consumption and no leaks at all :-)

I've had the Sin5 5W-60 in my 380 for the last 3000k and not a problem, car runs like a dream, nice and smooth with plenty of power.
Although it is a bit 'tappety' but it's been like that since around 30,000k (now on 92,9xx) no matter what oil I've used, and I've tried a few - Mobil 1 5w-35, Nulon "Road & Track" 15w-50, Mobil 1 5W-50, and Penrite HPR 10 semi-syn 10w-50 (in order from oldest to newest).

May not be related but i used Castrol Magnatec in my KJ AWD from day 1 and her valve stem seals started to let go around 140,000k's. Now has 180,000 k's on it and she is not great. Changed to Penrite HPR 20-70 at 160,000k's to help reduce smoke which it did but still not great. Just waiting for the 3.8 conversion now.

+1 for Shell Helix Ultra (5W-40). I was disappointed at first but It takes about 1000 kms to bed in. slightly quieter after that and I am noticing lower fuel consumption. Engine response about the same. Like the Penrite i had before, The Shell has turned brown after 3000kms suggesting good engine cleaning properties which is good for the lash adjusters that block up soo easily.

I want to try Royal Purple 10W-40 Next. I have heard nothing but good things.

I want to try Royal Purple 10W-40 Next. I have heard nothing but good things.

I have been using royal purple for years, in my old engine done 300,000ks, not a hint of smoke. It is quite expensive though, about $100 from auto barn. But essentially its just mobil 1 with the additive.... Like i said i have been using it for over 6 years. The only i doubt i have now is that Sprintex recommends using 5-40 oil so i might switch to Mobil 0-40 or Penrite Sin0 range

Guys, there is a massive thread somewhere on oil, viscosity etc etc

Here I have seen several times stated "I have used xxx and found it pretty good" how exactly did you find it good, did you actually take a sample out and test, friction and pressure tests, contaminant test etc etc like i have done in the past myself. THis is the only way to "find" an oil, other than that, it goes in clear, comes out black, pretty good really????

Hi a lot of you`se aren`t mentioning how many kays your cars have done, i think that would help us more. Im new to the magna scene, and i was just wondering what oil do you think would be best for my car? Its a v6 97 model te magna with 200,000 kays on the clock, she runs perfect with no noises from the engine. I was thinking for its service i will put valvoline 20-50 in it....its always been a clean reliable oil for me in the past, would 20-50 thickness be ok in the v6? Also how many litres of oil will it take?

15-40 should be all you use, as for brand, as madmagna stated, goes in clear, comes out black, myself, i use nulon 15-40, its a known brand, and average price, my neighbor has a lancer and uses wollies brand 15-40 oil lol

As stated many times in so many threads, in all my and my customers cars I use either HPR10 or Syn 5 Penrite

If someone uses an oil and they discover oil leaks, this is a problem with the car, not with the oil. If you are getting leaks then you have gaskets that need replacing

been using hpr10 for many years in a variety of cars i've owned - EF/EL Falcons, Mitsu Van, Camry ... and currently both my Slant Six Val and the VR-X get the same treatment. Never had a problem, it even fixed the early morning tappet tick in the EF Falcon.

Not true, some oils are now specifically for low emission engines like those from VW and are not suitable for an old engine like those in a magna.
