On the way home tonight I glanced at the rev counter which seemed to be barely moving. When I got home I revved the engine but the needle only rose 'slowly' to about 2000 rpm even though I knew it was around 5000 rpm mark.

Had this once on my old Camry. Turned out parking the car in the sun had caused the needle on the tacho to warp (the tip bent away from the gauge face) and it was fouling on the clear plastic in front of the instrument cluster. Is this possible?

Very possible. It could be a mechanical fault in the instrument itself, or in the electrical feed to it. Maybe pull the instrument cluster and check electrical connections and earths? A trip to the dealer otherwise.
