Hey guys,

A few questions that some solutions would help with...

1) as the revs of my motor go up, theres a loud hissing from around the carby... it's considerably louder when the motor is under load... last time i heard something like this - there was a disconnected hose (and the car was gutless and guzzle fuel), but all the hoses seems to be connected properly

2) how can i check to see if the vacuum advance unit on the distributor is working properly? heres the deal: my car is leaded TM, the old distributor had only one hose going to it... when the new motor got put in (unleaded one), the distributor got changed to an unleaded one and now there's two hoses going to it - the mechanic said "i tapped an existing hose and added it to the system" - how can i check it's all working properly and connected right? (cos this car is really thirsty - average 360 on a tank :doubt: )

3) is there anyways of checking the other components of the vacuum system?

4) can someone explain how these stupid vacuum systems work exactly - i know that the vacuum advances the timing and do other things, etc but how can i check that it's all connected right?

Thanks,
Bill

360 isn't all that high for the 2.6L
what you need to do is get a vacuum gauge and hook it up. if your friends have turbos then borrow there boost gauge as they are vacuum gauges aswell. It sounds more like a manifold leak than a vacuum leak because vacuum ones make stuff all difference

in order to check ur advance just suck on the line going to it and see if it spins inside. and to be sure its getting it when running have the advance on a single line with only a small filter and straight off the manifold

easy way to check the vacuum system is to get a mechanic to whack a vacuum meter on one of the hoses, it will tell you if you have enough vacuum.

The loud hissing, maybe you have a split vacuum hose?

And the way to check if the vacuum advance is working at all is to hook up a timing light and check your timing at idle with the vacuum still connected, and then rev the engine, the more you rev, the more advanced the timing should be.

Sorry thats all i know... i love efi :D

How can i tell if my manifold is leaking without taking the thing off?
and 360 on a full tank is ridiculous for a 4 cylinder! i wish that i could get over 400 - maybe 450 would be nice

thanks for the help so far

there is a little trick i learnt back in nam... get a selector spray (2 dollar spray bottle from wollies) and fill it with petrol and mist it around the intake side. if your misting away and the idle goes up then where ever you are misting around must be the source of the vacuum leak. (as the misted air/petrol is being sucked into the engine) Give this a shot mate with the obvious warning of dont burn your hand off[1]

Does the engine idle well?

360 is about what you'll get all the time and a vacuum leak wont make it worst by much at all sorry mate. its a 2.6L after all.

[1] its only an idea and i take no responsibilty. with this said i have done it countless times to fix the charade and various other cars and it is pretty safe
