There is no one answer, its like asking "how long is a piece of string?" lol
'98 with 220,000 km, I'd go for any 20-W50 oil. And change it every 6 months or 5,000 Km. GTX2 or 3 is good for the job. Clean oil is best. lol
(I would be more concerned about other things, like age of the cam belt, condition of lifters, water pump, idlers, ancillary belts, brake discs, pads, drive shaft boots and steering rack boots to be honest)

Anyone care to explain please how changing to a 20 grade oil will benefit a 220k old engine
Questions, does your engine burn oil (no I am not talking about oil leaks either)
I hve customers with well over 300k on the engines and still run HPR10, 20-w50 is not what is recommended and remember that todays engines are far closer in tollerance than engines were 30 years go so 220k on todays engines is like 600k on an older engine
As for oil, I use Penrite, I know a few who wont use it but also know a few who have stopped using Penrite and then ended up using Penrite again

It's cheaper. Easily available. Handbook says you can use it. No benefit otherwise. lol

Hang on, Penrite HPR10 is 10W-50 so what is different about it and does the 50 rating make it not recommended?...and how does the 50 rating in HPR10 differ from the 50 rating in GTX3?
My opinion is you use the best oil your pocket can afford (currently HPR10 10W50).....and remember that even the cheapest brand of oil must must pass the strict API standards - even Black and Gold.

I am not going to go back into the oil viscosity arguement again but will please ask you all who are asking to go read it yourself and see how it all works. Is not the 50 I am talking about, is the 20 lol, read up the oil viscosity story and you will soon see what I am talking about

Mal, what is your view on Penrite SIN 0, and HPR 5? When doing the suggestion thing on the Penrite website, these are what was suggested.

This has been covered a lot of time s recently, the vast majority of people on here seem to use HPR10.
I just put some in and the engine is loving it :D

I better get some then. 20W-50 is an "old school" oil.

Sorry for the late post but madmax every part u mention plus more new rocket cover seals, tubes seal, intake seal , plugs leads I have already done extreme clean car and engine but I pulled it down heads off pistons out it's bloody in mint condition lucky I guess brought off an old couple that owned since new full service record and it's not using oil there is not a single oil leak in my engine which I'm pretty sure is rare for a magna ;-) and in the middle of a manual conversion atm but owned car since 190,000 and done the oil every 5,000 only really just found this site just thought I'd ask about the oil
