View Full Version : Modifiying my 380VRX?

Alright, I recently bought a 380 VRX Series #2 BLACK with 41Km's on the clock for 17.5K. (dealers) just wondering what decent mod's I can do on it. Im in tasmania so obviously some can be out of reach.
I want a pioneer ipod intergration but don't know howmuch it'll cost.
Looking for 20-21" rims, wondering what set of tyres I need, if it needs to be lowered etc.
Intake/exhaust, not sure what wil suit/fit the 380. Currently getting 400km's a tank with 14.3 averaging on fuel.. pretty disgusted.. My other car (2010 maxima sts) which is a 3.5 having 10kw more power gets 11L per 100km's? Any ideas? Is it because it's CVT or what?
Let me know guys!
Ps; If you know the estimate of the prices of the modifications, that'd help me heaps! regards

Thanks for the warm welcome, I just got quoted 310$ for a berklee Bs0655 rear muffler, do you know howmuch they usually go for? Also I have read ALOT of the threads here, I was just curious, sorry If I pointlessly made another thread.

Hi there. Welcome. Nice to see another Stealth/black 380 - the most common/popular color on this forum (at last check - in the What Color Is Your 380 thread).
Anyway, I have the Berklee fitted, as do probably half the people here that have changed their muffler. Mine cost $140 and re-used original tip (round on my model, not oval like VRX/GT) - but that was almost 4 years ago so could be higher now. I'm actually about to bin that muffler soon in favour of a dual exhaust set-up (ie muffler on left side of rear too).
As for rims, you have a good idea with the 20-21 inch; under 19s are too small. Mine are 19 and just look okay. 20 or 21 will look awesome! Not sure of prices though... probably $2K+ (depending on tyres).

Thanks for your input buddy! Appreciate it heaps. Got quoted 310$ for the berklee's, I wouldnt mind keeping the chrome that i've got right now so would that make any differences?
With the wheels. I went through the pictures and I instantly fell in love for these ones > http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/9179/12017759.jpg, pm'd him and asked for the details/model/brand etc.. Haha yes! I saw the poll and looks like the black one's popular, hard to maintain though/washing wise. Also getting 14.2-3 per 100km in fuel consumption, is that about average? I got 70km's left on the computer and I've only done 372KMS. ( Note: first full tank after car was purchased) was expecting way more honestly, Also the prices of petrol jumping up to 1.50$ in my area.. 90$ for a tank anyone?

You should be looking at under 10 on a trip but town driving (stop start) can vary between 12-14
Averaging over 14 would seem a little high unless youre a real leadfoot. Again lots of threads on this one too

Whatcha expect from a P-plater? Haha but after a full tank I tried me best to keep it all econmical, coasting etc, won't budge from the 14L mark.

If it wont budge from a 14 average I would disconnect the battery and reset the ecu and see what happens. I was getting a high average, did what I suggested and my average dropped to 9.7. Worth a try

If you look in the economy thread - 14s are perfectly normal around town especially if the average speed is low (eg 28kph)

21" rims are very uncommon. Stick to 20s. There's a Wheel and Tyre FAQ in the DIY/FAQ Subsection of Tech Torque.
Definitely lower it too - big rims at stock height looks silly. Have a search through the section to see what springs/shocks are recommended.

On the Magna to reset the average litres per 100km you merely hold in the Mode switch for about 5 secs and it gives two beeps. Not sure about the 380 though.

If you go for big rims make sure you can get tyres that meet the load rating for the 380 first.

+1 on the 21" rims. give them the big miss as you wont get tyre choice and they will be expensive. As for your mileage, you either have something wrong with your right foot or your car as I can get 10.5 towing a camper trailer on the open road. Get the 90mm intake and lower intake mod done and I reckon you should notice the difference. If you are going to get a rear muffler make sure that they chop off the flange behind the original one as is stages down the 2 1/2" system to a 2 1/4" system. They can weld on another flange. I recommend a Redback muffler if you want a nice note without being noisy. If you want something a bid louder the berkelee is the way to go from what I can see

Thanks for your input bud,
I'm probably going for the 20" now. Gonna cost me over $1400 though. inc tyres, It's got cheap china ones on atm. Im on 13.5-14L now, running on 95RON, no mods, Average speed at around 38-40.
That's incredible you're getting 10.5 with a trailer... makes me feel like i need to go to the doctors for a right foot check hahah. Going to get the 90mm intake off ebay, as for the filter, Ill search around.
Im going to go with the berklee, $310 fitted and Ill make sure they do chop it off.
Yeah, with the economy, getting 430Kms a tank, is that what everyone else is getting?

The rims you liked on the blue car are BBOS rims. Tyres you want (to maintain same rolling diameter) is 225/35/20 - they're going to be expensive as they are not a popular size. If you go 19s, you need a 225/40/19 or 235/40/19 - these should be slightly more popular so you should get a set for reasonable cost. Here's a link to a tool that calulates tyre sizes when changing up or down rim sizes: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
How did you go with the berklee muffler? I dropped the rear muffler off mine (2 flang bolts and 2 bracket bolts - easy 10 minute job), and it sounds awful! So I'm also looking for options - anyone tried a hotdog instead of a full rear muffler? I want no sound at cruise, slight burble at idle, and full banshee wail at WOT.

Becarefull of the 20" wheels, one good pot hole will usually damage the sidewall of the tire and may buckle the rim, tyres are pricey and with no side wall to flex the ride is harsh , have a look at Falcon wheels, AU on, they all fit, but be sure to use the right black plastic sleeves so the wheel is supported by the hub not the wheel studs. We use 18 x 8 BJR wheels on the race cars, $150 ea.

If you go the 20's mate, im running 235/35 Kumho Ecsta's on my 20x8.5 rims, on king super lows all round, fills out the guards nicely and ride quality isnt too bad at all, in Sydney at Liverpool exhaust around the corner from me has quoted me $200 for the Berklee muffler.

Hey guys, totally forgot I started this thread. Honestly not many potholes In tassie so that shouldn't be a problem. Haven't done my exhaust yet because I got quoted 330$ for the berklee install, keeping my chrome tip as well. WTF? And I asked everywhere else and only the berklee muffler shop supplies the berklee products, other places only have lukey's or cheap universal sports mufflers..
People have said they got theirs done for 180$ fitted? And kif 200$ should be right then :P,
With the rims, I've been quoted 2.5K for a set of 4, 20" 8.5 hbr rims with the 235/35's. Them keeping my tyres and wheels too. I think they quoted each of mine for 50$ bux each? So I'm still shoppin around. Def not paying 330$ for a berklee muff if people are getting quoted almost half that.
May have to travel to melb and get these mods done
Afterall this is Tasmania :D

The price quoted depends alot on what brand of tyre. There are packages with shitty chinese rubber.

30-04-2011, 09:45 AM
yea i paid about the same for my 20's and they came with the Kumho KU31's which are an awesome tire. But as you said, your in Tassi so i'd imagine there isn't much in terms of variety and choice and price matching.
I did like the wheels on that link to the blue 380, but here in Sydney there are a lot of people with these wheels. When i was looking for wheels i wanted something different to everyone else and i think its the same with the guys that have 380's here on AMC.When i found the one's i have, they were new in the country and i was the second guy to buy them. Ive seen them on maybe 4 different cars in the 2yrs ive had them which is good as i hate seeing people with the same wheels ect..... lol
i cant wait to see this beast with some nice big wheels mate!

You're right about the hbr's, seen lots of 99' commodore utes, not v8's v6's! With 19inch ones.. Alot of them.. But when I first saw them it was love at first sight <3. maybe I'll go with chromies or black on black? Yeah kif I love your rims mate, haven't seen them once In tassie, so I assume they are rare haha. Still not In fashion here. I've currently got achillie brand tyres and they are absolute horse s***, they feel like plastic and make so much noise, so I'm trying to wear them out as fast as possible :D

Bob Jane suggested nikko pen lol ... If you saw the finish on these things there is no way you would draw on them in nikko!!! I'm just surprised they don't do a plain version, they are sort of limiting this wheel to a certain colour car with no other options.

When the car is moving, the black with red band would look like your discs are red hot, LOL.
Try St George tyres - they have an online store and ship to anywhere (for a small fee, of course), and while their package deal prices include cheaper spec tyres, the Nankang NS2 sports are actually not too bad (so ask for them), or you can request a better tyre like the Kumho KU31s. They have a huge range, and i have yet to see another wheel/tyre store with prices that go close (maybe Ozzy tyres??).
Just make sure you get 235/35/20, or 235/40/19, or 235/45/18s (my preference) to keep your speedo as accurate as it came from factory (ie 5km out at 100)

Reported many times, but 245/40/19s with +38 offset would not fit under my rear arches without serious rubbing problems. That's with Kings lows on.

Correct. I have 245/40/19 +35 offset with King Lows and had rubbing even with the guards rolled.....only fairly minor rubbing but still not good.
As far as wheels go, I think any 19 or 20's will look good but for what its worth, the black dished ones with the chrome lip in post #37 would look sensational!!!!

This is the problem here, everyone else with 8" rims seem to be running +38 offset, yours stick out an extra 3mm which is just enough to create a problem. I'm pretty sure my 8.5" rims are 35mm offset to so same within the boundaries of the 245 tyre & I had had rubbing & had to roll the gaurds a little.
So 38 to low 40's offset should be fine on the 380 without modification.

Mine are 245/40/19 with 38 offset and are 8.5" wide. No rubbing on the rear and I have Kings lows allround. After they were fitted I got 3 of Bob Janes biggest guys to sit in the car while I took it for a drive. They seem to tuck under the guard when loaded up.
Not much room though but seemingly enough.

Yeah, it would appear that extra 3mm is doing the damage (mine are also 8.5 inch wide).

So 38 to low 40's offset should be fine on the 380 without modification.
my old rims were +35 and 8" wide. never had problems in the rear on lows.
the front has some rubbing with high g cornering but for day to day were fine on superlows
yet to really test the high g corners on the new rims same 8" wide but +37 offset

Quick question guys, kinda off topic but, I drove down to hobart and got a wrench sign on my Computer where it displays fuel consump etc , just wondering what it is? Anyway, off to the car wash now. Thanks in advance.

The wrench is there to show that your car is due for a service.

It's telling you your service is due within the next 500km. The dealer will clear this when you get the car serviced or if you leave it there it will automatically go away 500km the other side of the service km's.

Is it all pre determined as in set by kilometers or is it actually due for one? I got the car 2000ks ago and they said they serviced it then. Thanks for the prompt reply guys, also can my local mechanics clear this all a mitsu dealership only?

Km driven it seems, there is a way to reset it but can't recall, I'm sure someone else will advise shortly.
If you don't mind it there just keep driving & it will clear 500km past the scheduled km service.

I recall someone on here saying the instructions for clearing it are in the handbook.

I am pretty sure you hold in the up and down button for setting the speed alert, this should reset the service reminder. Could be wrong though.
