View Full Version : no power to horn?

well as the tittle explains im getting no power to my horn, it was working fine a couple of days ago and it really has me stumped.
i've inspected the supposed fuse/relay in the engine bay but there isn't one there ( tf magna ) which corresponds to the picture of the horn/trumpet.
i've checked the fuse in the cockpit which is fine but still no power to the horn wire.
about a year ago now i spliced a wire from the horn power to power my gps which is mounted in the steering wheel plate and has worked fine ever since.
any ideas on what the problem could be?

may be the contacts in the steering wheel assembly have worn out or gone out of whack. start from there and work you way back......be carefull not to set the airbag off though!!!

im getting power for the cruize control which uses the same assembly, ive taken the box that surrounds the steering column off and probed the backing wires (green with black stripe) which i assume powers the horn as it matches the wire in the steering wheel, and both sides of the cockpit fuse have lit up with the test light telling me there is power at the fuse, so would it be that maybe the wire has come lose after the fuse box? im not really keen on ripping out panels to inspect just yet,(never done it before) but it just seems rather odd if this was the case, any other possibilities?

There has to be a relay somewhere for it. I know going throught the later model manuals it is suppose to be in the main fuse box under the bonnet. looking front on from the nose of the car it should be LHS of the fuse box, lower left corner first relay from the left. next to that would be the fog lamp relay (if fitted).
Was it you who had a front end hit recently? Any harness damage?
if you do find the relay, there's a number of relays all the same part, so you could swap relays around if you want to confirm if a relay was good or not.

my tf doesnt seem to have a relay for the horn in the main fuse box , can anyone confirm that tf models have a relay in the main fuse box?, still doesnt sound right as it was working fine a couple of days ago unless someone has removed it which is highly unlikly.
what does the relay actually do? does power go from the battery to the main fuse box (relay) then into the cabin fuse box (fuse)? without a relay in the main fuse box would power get to the cabin fuse box?
yeah it was me who had the car accident a month ago, but no harness damage to my knowledge, altho the alternator was damaged , the main plug that goes into it was half snapped and now requires me to rev the car to 3800rpm before the alternator kicks in, which is confirmed via the volt gauge i have, on a side note, is there anything on the alternator that can be replaced without replaceing the alternator to fix the problem which is that its not working untill higher rpm?

Basically relays are used to switch higher currents, so that's why i would expect one for the horns as they would suck a bit of current. Essentially low current is applied to a coil which creates a magnetic field and pulls a metal plate with heavy contacts to switch higher current. Hey maybe there is not one but why would they change something as basic as that.
Unfortunately i can only best guess but I did have a look at the parts catalog for the US market Diamante and it shows a horn relay 1997-2004 in the same position but i have been caught out before between theirs and ours but a horn is a fundamental item.
Sounds possibly like the voltage regulator assembly which also houses the brushes as well.
I'd get that fixed pronto, who knows what spikes it may generate. I think it may be cheaper and easier just to find a good secondhand alternator or get a reco with new bearings fitted etc.

This does not help much but sounds similar to you http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85000&highlight=horn+realy.
But you know Mal is eventually going to respond to this then we'll all know what's what.
EDIT: just found this one, might be more helpful and interesting. It has another symbol if this is correct.

My TF never had a relay in the engine bay fuse box for the horn, but when i replaced the dash harness with a KF one my horn was dead and i added the relay and work fine.
