I was under the car today just checking things out and I noticed rust on some of the metal.. its near the front and had me a bit freaked out.
So I turned to google.
long story short I found this: http://www.ehow.com/how_7301265_repair-rusted-under-carriage-car.html (http://www.ehow.com/how_7301265_repair-rusted-under-carriage-car.html)
It mentions removing some of the rust with a metal wire and a product called 'rust doctor'.
Has anyone used rust doctor or have a better (DIY) solution?
Would it or a similar product be avail. off the shelves?
Thanks in advance
really depends how bad your rust is, sooo how bad is it?

The "Rust Doctor" product they mention is pretty much "Rust Converter" which is available from Solver Paints/ Wattyl trade centers or any hardware store.
Once you remove the rust you apply 1-2 coats of this and it will kill the rust and prime the metal with a black base coat, how ever I would still paint over this with a can of Chassis paint which is available from any decent automotive store.
yeah but just using a coverter is no good if its already eaten a fair way into the chassis

Yes correct, we would also need to know how bad it is, if its surface rust, you will need to use a wire wheel/brush to remove the rust that is there. If its structural rust then you would need to cut out the affected areas and weld a new plate in place, bog it and then paint it. If how ever is structural rust and it needs to be cut out you would best be off taking it to a body shop as you dont want to jeopardize the strength of the chassis.

Its just the places where my damn driveway decided to attack and the metal got exposed.. and it looks to be not that big an issue as I did have the timing belt/100K service done a couple of months back and the guys that serviced the car didn't think it was worth mentioning.

Yep wire brush, if you want to do it properly rust convert it and spray it with black enamel.
Look for a product that contains phosphoric acid. The PA will convert the orange/brown rust oxide into feric phosphate which is black. Several applications of this, and the use a wire brush to brush it all off. It won't hurt to do many applications of this. Then as mentioned above use a good paint. A bituminous based paint is good for under car, as gravel and stones will not chip or flake the paint.
I ve done this, not to the car, but to the back gate, and it won't ever see rust again. lol

If you do nothing about the tow hook or the crossmember (or whatever it's called), i'll guarantee that they'll both out live you.
Purely cosmetic and nothing at all to worry about.
don't waste your money on rust converters etc...not needed.
