hey guys
About 3 weeks ago my car was on the way to get its re spray when the check engine light came on right after we drove through alot of dust caused by a tractor mowing dirt at a race course causing the dust to come over the road, i didnt think much of it as i kinda thought it was my over oiled K&N filter, which i cleaned out just days before.
Dropped it off picked it up yesterday no CEL came on. However this morning on the way to work i got no more then a K from home when the CEL light started flashing a total of 25 times before staying on. I turned the car off near work 15 k's later and it flashed again 25 times before staying on still.
I called mitsu this morning and told them and asked them for a diagnosis over the phone if possible but they want to plug it into their computer to find the fault.
Personally i think its the MAF sensor that may need a clean. I was thinking to get a paper filter after work, clean out the MAF and disconnect the battery to hopefully clear the error.
From the sounds of this, does it sound like its the MAF or something else.
Thanks in advance.

Likely common cause would be the ABS sensor too - can get clogged up. But could also be total co-incidence.
Best bet is to get someone (e.g. mitsu) to whack a scanner on it and check it out.

Or else you can buy an OBD2 scanner (plenty available, see JayCar for example), read the codes(s), then Google them to see what they mean. Then you'll have a good idea if it is MAF sensor related or something else, without the time hassle & expense of taking the car to a dealer. The JayCar scanner is around the $160 mark I think, and mine has paid for itself several times over in saved stealership costs.
Of course you may have a friendly pet dealer or mechanic close by who can run a scan and tell you the problem & not charge much.
Or else just find a mate who already has a scanner and borrow it for a while.

you can buy a Bluetooth OBDII device, plugs into the OBDII port and communicates via Bluetooth with your lap top etc. The device is a ELM327 and can be had off Deals Direct for around the $60 mark. Software is free, put out by some French guys.
Just saw this on another forum I frequent, remembered this thread.

Thanks guys. So far so good yesterday i went to mitsu brought a paper filter opened my air box pulled that ****ing k&n filter out and cleaned the oil residue that was sprayed around the MAF disconnected the battery threw the new filter started it, no light. Drove down the road. CEL flashed another 25 times then turned off and haven't seen it come back on since. Hopefully its all sorted out now.

Don't blame the ****ing K&N, blame the bozo who over oiled it!

alright guys so the light came back on late Thursday night again which was really starting to get annoying. On Friday i called up mitsu spoke to some gallah down there got quoted $137.50 for a diagnostic scan only, i told him in the politest way where he can go and shove his quote.
I went there after hours on Sunday and spoke to my mate who is the service manager but was off on Friday when i called in he said come in Monday and we'll work something out. I went there today drove straight into the workshop the guys wheeled the computer to my car plugged it in and all these error codes showed up from the MAF, they cleared the codes and CEL light was turned off and hasnt come back on as yet. Fingers crossed thats the end of that. Best part was i was in and out in under 10 mins.

Bitsa,
I get one every so often. It happens on start up which may have something to do with the rich mixture etc. I don't know for sure.
Anyway, after about 2 days of normal driving it clears itself. So I assume it's the 02 sensors. In the past, every time I went to book it in to Mitsu it cleared before I got it there. So maybe waiting a day or two might get rid of it - just a suggestion - up to you.

Thanks for your input might just wait couple days and see if it goes, if not she is almost due a service if its still there will deal with it then. Cheers.
