Look on the transmission side of the engine for the engine number. If the number starts with 6G72, you have a 3ltr. 6G74, means 3.5 litre and 6G75 means you are a lucky SOB who has a 380 motor!

Last 3.0 was the Series 1 TJ, so anything before this could be either, if TH is 50 50 if is TJ is most likely 3.5

Yes, TJ series 1 had the last of the 3.0L - most buyers opted for the 3.5, the smaller engine was dropped - don't know if they "ran out" of them, or deleted it with the series 1 update August 2001 because it wasn't selling.
Both are good engines, they will trickle along in slow traffic without complaining yet move with a convincing bellow when asked. The 3.5 just has a more convincing "bellow" at full song. lol Auzzie drivers want GRUNT, you know. lol

As anyone who has owned a 3 litre 3rd gen will tell you, the 3 litre was less powerful and torquey, but was smoother, revved harder and sounded different (some might say better).

When I moved from the TF to the TH I definitely noticed a difference in the motor, yes the 3.5 had more go to it, but the 3.0 was more 'fun' if that makes any sense? Especially for someone like myself who tends to drive 'spiritedly' all the time whilst staying under the speed limit (mostly :) I'm a creeper, I kill babies don't ya know lol)

The average Aussie driver wants instant "oomph" and "grunt" when they put their foot down at any speed, the 3.5 auto will do that, easily. The average Aussie driver doesn't really care if the engine starts to sound a bit gruff above 4,000 rpm. It comes from growing up with carby big sixes, that moved well but were out of breath above 2,500 rpm. Give them a sweet sounding high revving engine with little low down torque (="Oomph") and they are lost. Pity. Some nice Euro/Jap engines are not available in Aus because of this.

Pfft all you need is a decent four banger it fun to hear a engine scream
As long as it has MIVEC, a couple of turbos and makes real power. (Kind of rules your car out Sparkster! lol)
Ever heard a Subie turbo on full song? lol Pure music! Or an Evo, for that matter.

Sounds good! Pure music! Euro engines deliver!
But enough spammy spam in a no spam zone.
The 3.0 L 24 valve is good, the 3.5 L is better. And you won't find a 3.0 L in a Magna built after August 2001. It may have continued on in some overseas models, or maybe local Pajeros, but that's just supposition on my part.

the 3.0 6G72 was continued in Thailand , for the Triton utes. afaik is still made today.
Pajeros were all 3.5 after about 1996
