How old are the brakes? Could be warped rotors?

Warped rotors sound about right. Happens all the time in my dads 4x4. Braking lots + hit cold mud doesnt mix. Similar thing can happen with lots of braking and cold water

Warped or Glazed rotors is what you have wrong with your car, is common especially when people do not use a torque wrench to tighten wheel nuts, the hats can warp and then the rest is history

They are around a year old mate. They seem fine but i might go get them machined and see what the deal is.

Thanks Lads.

I found that when I had warped rotors - front and rear,(thanks Bob Jane) the shaking/shuddering was mostly felt through the brake pedal and the seat of my pants. No feedback was felt at the steering wheel. If the steering is giving the feedback it may be worn tie rod or rack ends that allow the wheels to 'shimmy' when braking, so I'd check that first before changing the rotors.
Good Luck.

Sorry but wrong, if the front rotors are warped you will feel it through the steering as the front end is shaking

You need to do a run out check on the front brakes, if you are getting shaking or shuddering of any kind only when brakes applied then is a braking issue

Only one way to check ball joints is to check their start up turning torque. Just looking at them doesn't work. I had a brake shimmy at low speed and wobbles at higher speed. Skimmed the discs and replaced ball joints and its fixed the problem.

ECHO ALERT!: FFS use a torque wrench when you tighten your (car's wheel) nuts! /END ECHO.

As mentioned, its a common warped disc. If its machined a few times already or is just old, you may need new ones.

I kept going to a particular tyre shop for years, even when it was a fair way to travel - just on the basis he was religious in using a torque wrench (plus he knew how to balance Renault wheels that didnt have a hole in the centre!!).

Most tyre shops use a rattle gun to tighten wheel nuts, some will at least use a lever. Hardly any use a torque wrench... Keeps the brake machining boys in business though.

Whats the theory behind over tightening wheel nuts & warped rotor?

Handy hint if you can be bothered, is to take the rotors off yourself & take them in for machining off the car.. Halves the price for a total of half an hours work..
I had mine done recently for $44 :woot:

Whoot! I got ripped off then! Paid $50 to get my fronts skimmed! lol

The brake rotor is trapped between the hat - where the studs are mounted - and the wheel. Tightening the nuts too much, or unevenly, can distort the hat as well as the rotor.

Does anyone know how much it costs to get the rotors machined on the car?

Not sure about the guys that can machine them on the car but if you take your car to a shop it's about $50 per corner..
