View Full Version : Gearbox Issue
Hi All.
Got an issue with our TL Wagon.
When putting the car in Gear, (P-D, P-R), sometimes it will take a couple of seconds to actually start moving..
Also a Couple Days ago, after my Wife went to start her Car, it was dead, which was an Open Circuit Battery, so a New one was put in....
The Gearbox and Battery all happened around the same time.... I did a "re-Learn" of the Transmission, after searching here, and also the "Change-Up", Procedure. Didn't make much of a difference....
Car had its Major Service done at 105k, with Gearbox Fluid replaced, (Stated by the Log Book), and now has 135k.
Any ideas what could be causing this??
Cheers Guys
I'd check the fluid level first - check it's OK and the fluid is not burnt or brown. I'd also check that the car is not in Limp Home Mode which will start the car in 3rd gear only to protect the gearbox after something drastic has been detected. Please note that the Magna may not have the LHM feature although most cars do....so it may not apply in your case. I'm still in ignorance!
If it is in LHM, you can (in some makes of cars) manually select 1st to overide the LHM, and in your case if you can manually select 1st, and the car immediately moves then you can assume the car is in LHM.
If the above does not apply, then I'm sure someone will correct my assumptions.
Good Luck.
Well it drives ok on the Road... so I'm presuming its not in Limp Mode...
Checked the Oil Level and Colour.... Level is Fine... Checked Hot, and colour is "Honey" colour??

SO the relearn involved the R-N-D sequence as well. I'd try it again. I have seen this work when performed by the Dealer. I doubt the box crapped itself exactly the same time as the flat battery. Sounds like the computer needs the re-learn.
A follow up on this little Drama I Have.... I tried the Learn Sequence again, there was no Difference. So this Morning I took it down to a Transmission Specialist who checked it out and told me what I was fearing the Most....... The Dreaded Wave Spring is "on its way Out" mainly affecting Reverse "at this Stage"..... He can whip out the Box and Repair it for $1200, or he said just drive it till she Blows, then up for $2500+ for a Re-co Box.....
Money we just didn't need to spend right now... BUMMER!!!

maybe before splurging on something you don't need go and service the gbox again but at mitsi dealer, and make sure the oil doesnt look like "honey" but looks like strawberry or some shit, what i mean is red/pink not gold

I'd get a second opinion on that - I didn't think the wave spring gave any warning in most fail cases....that's a large wad of $$$$ to just handover on one say-so.
I would also suggest getting a second opinion -- from a Mitsubishi dealer service centre.
The automatic transmission fluid should be a red/pink colour -- definately not honey.
You say transmission fluid was changed 30k ago, if they didn't use the the correct fluid (SPIII) and damage has been done to the gearbox you should hassle the crap out of the incompetent mechanic who did the last service to pay for any transmission repair.
I also did not think the wave spring gave any warning -- one day you wake up and find you don't have any drive gears, turns out wave spring has failed (snapped), debris ends up in fluid pumped through the transmission causing damage and $2000+ rebuild.
It's possible the transmission 'specialist' is seeing dollar signs -- an easy $1200 to fix an issue that doesn't exist.

mine was doing the same thing 1 month ago, 2 weeks later it barly drove, got a mate from a mits dealer to check it out, he said the it had a wave spring fail, and i should get it replaced as soon as possible,
took it to Mits-fix and Mal checked it out and relpaced the auto, Mal was surpirsed that it still drove,

That's the other option is replace the box with a second hand one other than an rebuild. Alot cheaper.
