View Full Version : Strut Tops for TH
Need your advice please....
I need new strut top bearing plates for my 2000 3.5 TH - I've got new King springs and Boge shocks go on. Repco don't stock them. Mitsubishi quoted $282 front pair and $164 rear pair ($446 total, pats only). I don't want used ones from the wreckers. Was wondering if the US Diamante ones would fit, and if anyone else has used them? They're listed on RockAuto.com and AutoPartsWarehouse.com Any advice is appreciated.

What is actually wrong with the ones you have? I would be quite happy with second hand items as these are not really prone to damage or wear, at least not that I'm aware of!! Mine have been out twice & all look nearly new..

The rockauto ones look spot on. They certainly are a lot cheaper, but postage usually doubles the price.
I've bought a lot of stuff from Rockauto, plugs, belts, filters, cam belt kit, gasket sets - usually if you choose the same year Diamante as your Magna, you get the right bits, eg for a 2001 TJ I buy bits for the 2001 Diamante. Haven't gone wrong yet.

The roller bearing in them carry the full weight of the car's front, and go clunky with age. Not dangerous but just annoying.

I can understand that for the fronts but not the rears.. OP wants to replace the rears aswell which just seems a little odd to me!

Yes, I would check them for play - both front and rear - before buying new ones.
If the fronts are anything like the old Galant/Sigma ones, the cheapskate way to fix fronts is to unstake the bearing, remove it and buy new bearings. Bearing loctite on the new ones and stake them in. Worked for me anyway.

+1 for bearings!
Take the old one to a place like CBC and they'll match it and will only be a fraction of the cost :D

Old bearings will have a number on them so CBC can match it easily. Make sure new bearings are glued and staked in well, otherwise it may all come apart first serious bump you hit. lol

I left a set of Pedders superlows with standard Mitsubishi shocks on it for way too long which have destroyed the bump stops and ruined the driver's side strut top. There's a clunking noise when I stop, turn, or take off from traffic lights, and pot holes feel like the car is about to break in half. The back set are probably ok (except for some creaking noise occasionally), but since the rear mounts aren't that expensive, and while I have the suspension pulled apart, I thought I may as well replace them too.

KYB are in the process of getting these licenced for Australia as there are licencing issues with copyright etc etc, go figure on a car of this age hey heneway, these will fit
You DONT need to replate the rears, they are simple rubber bushes, nothing more than that, replacing them will do nothing
The fronts, I can do slightly better than your quote but then there is freight on top of that which sort of will cancel that out
Find out what the freight will be before you get too excited from the US ones

I just checked - I can get a pair of front mounts delivered from rockauto for AU$114.19 including postage. This is about half of what Mitsu quoted you. Miraculously, all the stuff I have bought off rockauto has come out at about half the local dealer's price, landed at my doorstep in a week. Makes me wonder who is getting wealthy off local spare parts prices. Or is the local supply chain that inefficient? lol
I'll give the US ones a go. Let you know how it works out.

What brand ? Genuine US OEM fronts are about $60-70 ea MR554246 and they would easily fit in the $40 (approx) flat rate box. I managed to get 2 complete rear hub assemblies to fit in that size box.
What's the break down of that price for delivery? Personally I'd consider paying a little extra and go genuine for an item of known quality to avoid any issues.
Ended up getting 2 x front KYB strut mounts (with bearing plates), 2 x rear KYB strut tops, 4 x KYB bump stops with bellows (same as Monroe Strut Mate kit) for AUD$210 delivered. Took 10 days to arrive. Will install soon.

Where did you end up getting them from?
1995-98 Hyundai Sonata appear to share the same part number as Magna/Verada/Diamante.
Rockauto.com - a parts warehouse based in the US. No problems at all with their service or delivery. Parts will be installed in the next few weeks.

bit of an old thread but I went to go and do this, CBC said they didn't have anything like that available, so they rang KOYO who supply the bearings to Mitsubishi they have them but wont sell them, they are selling to Mitsubishi only. cant believe it, ive bought other bearings for my Magna before.
EDIT: on further inspection looks like are not meant to be disassembled the bearings are pressed in such a way that you cant remove them without damaging the tops, so after market it is then. found $80 each at Auto one, and Mitsubishi genuine was $137 each
