Hey all,

I did a transmission flush a few weeks ago and the car seems to have liked it. I think I overfilled it though, I found it impossible to accurately determine the level on the dipstick, the new fluid looked completely clear. So first question, am I the first person to find that a problem? How do you get round it?

As I've probably overfilled it, I dumped all the box sump oil and refilled a bit. Now I'm having the same trouble. I felled it to the cold mark which was easy to see. Then, with engine running and car in Neutral, I took the dipstick out, which was completely covered in trans fluid. I've read heaps of threads testifying that this is the way to determine trans fluid level, how could it be within the cold range and so far out in the hot range? I figure it's just splashing. So how long should I wait after starting the engine (while hot) to take the trans level?

While warming up the car it was flaring a fair bit too. I have to wonder how long it'd take to level out after dumping the sump fluid? 2 mins? 20km driving?

Sorry for the basic questions. I did a search but couldn't find the specific info needed.

Cheers

Sorry, double post, please delete either thread

Does it return to the cold level when it goes cold again? And the stick is shaped like _/\___/\_____________________________
wipe it and re-check, is it wet all the way from the bottom or is there a dry spot under the higher "bump" at all?

Its cooling now, ill have a look later. When initially filling it was dry from the top of the cold reading down.

I checked the cold level this morning and it was at the bottom, so I topped it up to the top of cold. It still flared pretty wildly on a roundabout 1km from home, though I'm not sure if that might have been because it was only just filled

Flaring has stopped (when hot at least), but I still can't tell where the hot level is. When the car is running it seems to splash a bit up the dipstick. There doesn't seem to be a constant fluid level anywhere, but there should be at least the height of the cold markings right?

Hi All,
I just had a trans flush done by my local mitsu dealer last saturday.
He told me to have the trans in 'Park' with engine running and at operating temp when checking trans oil level.

Hey Galois,

on my car the cold level is way too low. It is supposed to be checked hot. I think that they make the cold mark too low because when you heat it up and adjust the level it is far easier to add than subtract.

On my car it seems to flare and then thump into gear when the fluid is too low.
