Experiencing a noise in recently built motor. A clattering noise which increases with RPM. Also car does not idle at all, it starts, runs, hunts for idle for a bit then dies...
I will post a video on youtube of the noise...

too much tension on the timing belt
or the timing belt is rubbing on the plastic covers
sound is the same as the revs of the motor
was the waterpump replaced

Waterpump was not replaced but removed disassembled and checked. Water pump was servicable. So you think it could be as simple as a rubbing belt? Any idea on the idle issue? I was hoping not to remove the plastic covers but if it will save my bum then ill do it lol...

recheck the timing marks while you're there too.

Sounds like valve clatter. Did you clean out the hydraulic lifters and pump them up before you put the rocker gear back on?
If not, keep running the motor until the clatter goes away and the idle should come good by itself. Check the oil level in the engine and remove the oil cap and look inside to see that the rocker gear is getting oil.
Rebuilt mine (heads only) and it clattered for a while even though the lifters had been filled up.

i cleaned and primed all the lifters when i pulld the valve gear off.
thing is yeah okay I an start and run it but eventually it does die by itself. I'll try it again and see if theres oil coming up...
thanks for the preplies
