View Full Version : Scratching off black lining on rear windscreen to fit high brake light....

Hi all.

Just wondering it there's any recommendations on how to remove the black paint lining on the top of the windscreens? The reason I ask is that my rear windscreen in my TJ was replaced with a TE windscreen and the TE's never came with high brake lights, so there is no cutout on the windscreen surround.

Any recommendations on how to do it? I don't want to scratch the window itself as it is currently roadworthy.

Otherwise I'd consider moving the brake light but I don't want to replace my parcel shelf with one from a earlier magna. Would it be roadworthy/legal to have anouther one somewhere else? e.g. maybe a bit low - but then my other issue is the gap caused by the roof lining as there is nothing to hold it close to the roof.

Cheers for the help - appreciate it.

Regards - kovac

Was this done by a professional as part of a claim or something? If it was get them to fix it. The black area is probably etched into the glass as a guess.

there would be no issue moving it down to the parcel shelf. apart from being crap. i would complain to the place that fitted the wrong glass. as the glass comes with the Tabs that hold on the light, and its a pain in the ass to get them on.

No I replaced the rear windscreen. Managed to find a TE one for really cheap so I went for it, otherwise I'd have been up for $400 for a brand new one installed. Got away with the replacement for far less.

That is what I was wondering - whether the black area is just paint or actually etched in the glass. If it is etched then I may need to consider getting the ugly te parcel shelf I suppose... maybe I'll see if I can get a aftermarket brake light of some sort. Wonder if these would have to be adr approved. If I place a aftermarket led of some sort on the parcel shelf - what do I do with the gap between the roof lining and the roof itself - get some good glue and just stick the darn thing?

I have been reading some threads about the problems people have had with the brake lights continuously coming off. Maybe its a good thing after all?

The black stuff is paint, I would suggest masking up an outline and using a glass safe paint stripper.

Cheers. How would I prevent it from leaking onto the rest of the windscreeen surround? My biggest issue is trying to get under that screen as there's not a heap of headroom space back there....

To be honest, I dont think it can come off, I believe the paint they use is baked into or onto the glass, I have never seen it come off, have had a go at one of these wrecks, paint stripper does not work, even a screw driver attacking it did bugger all

THink you may be stuck with either a spoiler with a light or a TE/F lower one

That is interesting. I might take a trip to my local pick-a-part and see if I can't have a bit of a go at the ones there. Maybe I'll take two bottles with water and paintstripper and some sandpaper lol

I took the spoiler off as it didn't look good with the stock rear bar but now that I have a vrx one I'll see how it looks - maybe it'll be alright.

Otherwise I'll have to look into getting a aftermarket one or a ugly TE parcel shelf. I'm thinking of getting a strip of red led's - I just need to find how to mount it somehow. Or I could always go for an aftermarket one like this (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Red-24-LED-Car-Brake-Stop-Rear-Lights-Auto-Rear-Lamps-/260767411119?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb6f2ebaf) but it sure is ugly - but at least it'll keep me out of trouble with the cops.

Any recommendations on how to hold the lining to the roof? Its hanging a little bit as it used to prop'd up with the brake light..

Isn't there a clip at the back of th headliner somewhere to hold it up?

factory glass is generally ceramic banded, not a paint as such, nor is it etched on to (or into) the surface. As said previously, going to be damn difficult to get off; quoting this link (http://books.google.com.au/books?id=YoVvcgyCA9UC&pg=PA158&lpg=PA158&dq=windscreen+ceramic+band+removal&source=bl&ots=liewH63ZWL&sig=tqEwRbNnks1wfV7sOaGctx0UBrM&hl=en&ei=F3SmTdWGJYuMvQP-58CfCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CCQQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=windscreen%20ceramic%20band%20removal&f=false) "all the associated glazing is now printed with a ceramic fired in black band to protect the polyurethane adhesive from ultra violet degradation, and also for cosmetic reasons so that the adhesive cannot be seen" so it seems the black banding on car glass is baked onto the glass

The problem with these light are they cast red light all over the back window because there is no edging on them.......I had one on my mazda and of a night time you couldn't see out the back window when your foot was on the brake.
