View Full Version : General Questions about Fog lights.

I bought a Magna 01 executive TJ around New years and it came with a space for what guessed were fog lights but it had none fitted. After seeing a few magnas on the road without any i assumed it was standard for some Variants.
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii165/Sunol13/greenmagnaarrow.jpg This obviously isnt my car, i can't upload photos, but its the same grill.
I don't like the look of it empty so im looking to getting some fitted in but i have a few questions.
Are the lights fog lights or are they some sort of other lights? e.g driving lights or visibility lights. i dont know the difference between them, i just want to know what they are.
If they are fog lights, can i get a set of any other lights easily fitted in their place? Possible cut out a hole in the grill and fit a different pair in. I dont have foggy weather, i only want to lights so the car looks better, and would like to not recieve a fine for havinng foggies on. Perhaps swap out the 'fog' part of the lights and put other lights in the case so it fits in. (if that is a really nooby thing to say then your free to laugh, i don't know much about these things)
I also plan to put some LED's in next to them which i reckon will look great, but wont look any good without lights next to them.

I would prefer to hook up the 'non-fog lights' and the LED's with my parkers to save inserting a new switch, but that can't be done with fog lights.
Also how much would buying a 2nd hand of lights cost?
Thanks for the help.
I think 2nd hand lights with the indicator stalk that has the switch for them are usually $150-$175? Wreckers usually charge $75/fog light, and sometimes fog light stalks sell on here for about $30, the lights themselves are the same between magna and verada, but the brackets that mount the foglight to behind the bumper are different between magna and verada. e.g. you can put verada foglights on a magna as long as you have the magna foglight brackets. I've seen a few magnas with foglight kits from supercheap etc, never tried to fit one so not sure whats involved.
fog lights are yellow.
driving lights are white.
Rules for using driving lights is same as high beam - only when there isn't a vehicle within 200m ahead of you.
Fog lights are for poor visibility. You could probably get away using driving lights as fog lights.
I don't know of anyone getting booked for incorrect use of lights (aside from an AMC member for high beams recently) but I know of lots of people who get flashed or asked to turn off their driving lights. :)
Another alternative for you is a colour coded insert that looks like an air duct - I don't remember who, but a newish AMC member has a nice white Magna with these ducts and IMO it looks better than lights.
again IMO - stay away from extra LEDs - they're dicky and I have heard of people being booked for these but they were the washer lights.
Cheers + welcome to AMC!!

They're fog lights. As you've noted, it's illegal to drive with them on unless it's actually foggy - I have the fine to prove it lol
Even if you found or modified a set of driving lights to fit, it's probably not worth it. They are designed to supplement your high-beam, and so they only come on when the high-beams are on. Given that the bumper only has small cut-outs and are quite close to the ground, driving lights aren't really worth it.
Perhaps swap out the 'fog' part of the lights and put other lights in the case so it fits in. (if that is a really nooby thing to say then your free to laugh, i don't know much about these things)
You could possibly graft the reflector out of another set of lights and put them into the foglight casing, but it isn't for the faint hearted. My opinion is if you have to ask, it's not really for you.
I also plan to put some LED's in next to them which i reckon will look great, but wont look any good without lights next to them.

Daylight running lights (the LED strips you see standard on many new cars) are exactly that - daytime lights. For them to be legal, they must be wired up so that they turn off when the parkers or headlights come on.

That is no longer the case. It all depends on beam pattern. Fogs are low cut and wide whereas driving lights generally have long and narrow beams.

For driving lights, you have to remember that by vehicle, it does not mean on-coming. It also means vehicles in-front of you travelling in the same direction.

I got defected one for fitting by accident a set of driving lights and used as fog lights (weather was poor).

Another idea is to use those holes for CIA.

Someone on here did get booked for having those LED strips. Apparently you cannot fit them if your car does not come with them.
In addition, fog lights must be wired to parkers and generally used without headlights (the whole purpose of fog lights is to provide visiblity beyond the fog by lighting under the fog). Having headlights on in fog will cause the light to bounce back and reduce visibility.
Driving lights must be wired to highbeams and treated as highbeams. Generally, it is better to mount driving lights on nudge bars etc so they are level with the main headlights.

Whats CIA?
I would like to see what they would look like on the car, along with the color coded induct that Oggy mentioned, so if anybody has a picture of them that would help.
But alas, it seems at this point wont get to do the car how i imagined :(

I got told by the police its a distraction using fog lights weather its foggy or not? and i have had mates been given a fine for driving with them on at night when we had all that rain on the coast not so long ago? so i just don't use them now

They're a no go in rain - they reflect too much off the wet road and add to dazzling for other cars.
They are useful in fog. Thats it. And when its foggy, they're a godsend (he says remembering one horror drive in the wee hours one foggy night in the middle of nowhere in a borrowed HQ with no heater/demister, one working headlight and me driving at 30kph with my head out the window because the screen was fogged up. Froze my arse off...). Normal headlights, even low beam, just bounce off the fog and present a white wall.
I have had foglights on my cars for the last 5 years or so - have used them twice.
They used to be wired so they only turned on with parkers - switching low or high beam on deactivated them. This is the way it should be, as they're only of use on their own in fog.

you take it into your own hands driving with them... i have mine on all the time because i can and because i have found i have less people pulling out in front of me or cutting into my lane when i have them on during the day.. so in that case i will always do it.
but its in your own hands if you get done its your own fault :)

And yet run the risk of someone doing something silly because their eyesight might not be great and you dazzled them. If you see an old Renault giving you the finger in traffic one night, that will be me ;)
During the day is fine (ask a Volvo driver!), but turn them off at night. You already have headlights. There are reasons why the wattage of low beams are set by law - having foglights on effectively doubles the output, kinda defeating the purpose of low beams.

getting back to the main point..... i dont think i will put foglights there.
im thinking of going angel eyes in my low beams tho.... however putting orange ones in there aswell so they flash with my indicators.
i had a look at my dads Camry and his car would loook sooooooooooooo good with engel eyes.

I gotta ask as well. Are the lights on the VR-X classed as fog lamps or just general spotties? They come on when parkers or headlights are on. I was debating with a mate who said they are illegal but I said why would mitsubishi fit a defectable accessory?

They're foglights. Spotlights must be wired so that they only come on when the high beams are on, and are supposed to complement the high beam (greater distance, spread, etc). Foglights are aimed low and have a short distance, and are obviously like this to pierce through fog.
Foglights are perfectly legal to use, as long as it's foggy. They're only illegal to use when it's not foggy.

Where do you (or the cops) draw the line on this though? What if it's "a little bit foggy, officer"?

I'm not sure. But I got booked for using them on a perfectly clear night, so no argument there lol

the driving lights on the magna are the same wattage as the low beam and are aimed lower then the head lights, i have never seen a set of magna driving lights that are bright enough to dazzle aslong as they are adjusted correctly, unlike say vx ss driving lights, there friggin bright !
i have the vrx front end on my car parras and driving lights and with all of this on is nowhere as bright or dazzling as alot of the cars from europe cars out there. i know mine are not dazzling as i have driven toward and been followed by my car with someone else driving.
the point is its personal choice and i wont stop driving with them on if someone else doesnt like it then its tough titties for them ;).

Yours are fog lights. Not driving lights. Driving lights has same beam patter as highbeam. Fog lights as mentioned before, has a low cut and wide beam which is to illuminate the kerb and go under fogs. Issues with runnig fog lights in rain is that because it is low cut and wide, it tends to reflect off the wet road and onto oncoming traffic. It will have to be seriously heavy rain to minimise that reflection.

I got fog lights the magna ones... i bought LED globes for them - they dont do much for light - acutaly prbly nothign at all - but they look good - n thats the reason i got them, i been pulled over before 2 times and told me it was illegal to drive with foglights on while there was no fog. i explained that they are LED's and that they arent bright at all - they are visibilty lights to make my car more visible to other drivers and that it is a safety matter. They let me off both times - called RTA they said it was ok too :) so yea
hooked them up to parkers - its plenty for LED's :) parkers and every other light in my car is LED except headlights. you can go down that path :)

Going to grab another HID kit from work just need to know which size?
thanks

You are putting HIDs in the fog light for better visibility in the country? These lights are designed for low, short and wide beam spread. Only useful in fog conditions. Putting HIDs in there will just make the foreground so bright you wont see anything up ahead.

It doesn't work quite like that - no matter what type of bulb you put in there, it's still a fog light. Putting a weaker bulb will not make it legal to use.

I was going to say the exact same thing.
If you want better lighting for country driving, I'd whack a set of projector HIDs in your high beams, in a similar vein to what you did with your low beams.
