Engine moving when selecting gears...

Is this normal?

I haven't seen another car do it, but its not often you look at your engine when you select drive or reverse when your bonnet is up and your head is under there...

The way my 08 380 VRX does this it looks like it is supposed to do this.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Called some Mitsubishi specialist but he didn't seem to understand what I meant and suggested I get engine mounts looked at.

Which I will do depending on the outcomes of the responses on here.

Thanks in advance.

its supposed to move back and forth a small amount when changing gears in the auto. If its moving an abnormal amount id say its your engine mounts. Mates car did this in his 380. You could actually rock the engine back and fourth by hand when it was off. Replaced mounts, fixed the problem.

Thanks for the response.

I just went out and grabbed the engine and shook it to see if the play was there with the engine off.

I was trying pretty hard to move it and could hear water slapping around in the windscreen water reservoir The engine didn't have any play so I am assuming it is not engine mounts...

Will still ask the question when I take it in for the 75K service.

I wouldn't describe it as a small amount...

If any one has the chance to see if their 380 has this movment when selecting Park to Drive or Drive to reverse that would be comforting .

Cheers.

Get poly mounts and the engine isn't going anywhere.

of course the engine is going to move when you move it from park/neutral into a gear

moving it from free spinning to engaging a gear there would be force applied to the engine through the box thus making the engine move

Ok well I just changed the oil in the 380 & had the bonnet up so gave this ago.

Going from park to reverse I reckon I saw the Supercharger rise about 5mm & going to drive probably drop by the same so lets say 10mm total movement (estimated). Was a bit hard to see anything else as I had my head around the pillar with my foot on the brake & stretching for the gear stick.

Thanks for the effort, not an easy task to complete...

Mine moves about 10mm...in fact the supercharger hits the strut brace if i do it hard enough.

Didn't some of the older Magna models have a mini shock absorber on the front mount to soften this fore/aft movement?

All engines do it, even a 36 HP VW will twist on the gearbox mounts when you give it some stick. A red motor in an old Holden does it too, when giving it some revs in neutral or gear. Something to do with Physics. lol

i would be concerned if your mounts were gone at 75 thousand k's unless its been given a hiding. My mates for example replaced both top mounts at about 98 thousand. i've only replaced the gear box mount after 170 thousand. Other 3 mounts are original still.
