Yeah, I know, why the crap would anyone want to lift a friggin Magna?!

I just purchased a TF with a mint condition engine and recon gearbox (unregistered), it drives a dream and I snagged it for $400. This weekend I will be making a 400km trek with it to what will be its new home, at a friends farm on a salt lake, where it will be raced against Excels, Falcons and S1 RX7's. :)

Tomorrow I will begin the process of making it as race friendly as possible, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheap (free) ways to get a bit more ride height? I thought of putting plates on the strut top, but then im limited to the length of the bolts to screw a nut onto from above. Any relatively sane suggestions are welcomed!

Also if anyone can think of anything else that might be appropriate for racing fire away! (First things first, airbag is getting taken out)

I have 3 days to prep, and would prefer to spend little/nothing :) Also we have a mandrel bender and will be making our own roll cages for the race cars.

Unless you really know what you are doing in regards to cages......don't.

A poor cage if far more dangerous than no cage at all. And this is coming from a boilermaker who should know better!! :)

A mate designs/builds them :)

As long as he is DLI ticketed, you'll be fine then!

Apart from ripping out all interior, what else can you do? Remove inner door skins for weight saving, or weld up doors and go in though the windows?

you could make some dodgy spacer to go between the spring and the strut top? like 2 bits of steel welded to the strut top, giving you a stiffer spring, but also making the spring coils hit on bottom out lol

I know spring makers can compress springs - wonder if they will stretch them?

Will give you a softer ride for those off road shenanigans into the bargain :)

Apparently the old school way of a ghetto suspension lift was to stuff tennis balls between the shock and the spring, but I doubt this would last overly long with the activities I plan on participating in :P

I think Ive given up on trying to lift it, I just cant think of anything safe. I did discover a few parts in the car that arent broken, which are on my VRX, so time to get swapping! :D

You can (or could) buy rubber blocks that go between the coils - you jack the car up so the suspension hangs loose, then force these blocks between the coils - space them nicely and add as many as you need.
On an old dirt track I'd be temped to cut up an old truck or tractor tyre to make the blocks. Use either cable ties or wire to retain them.

I've done this to get my Datto 1600 on a transporter, and it worked very well for this. It will give you lift but will severely reduce suspension travel which is exactly what you dont want. What ever you do though post some pics, sounds like a ball-tearingly good way to use a Magna!

For peoples interest, the magna took lap record and won the day. It proved to be insanely awesome to do rally style racing, excellent balance, shockingly, no understeer, if anything a bit of oversteer and left the red cars for dead :) very happy with it's effort, can't wait for it's next race outing! Thread and photos to come when I'm not on my phone :)
