Just out of interest...what would a reco'd 3 litre V6 engine cost, fitted, to a TS?
Any recommendations as to brand / suppliers in Melbourne (south-east)?
i know where i live, a 2nd hand engine from the wreckers was 650.00 and the mechanics qouted 700 to install, engine was fully tested by wreckers and come with a 6 month warranty, a reco engine from repco could cost as much as 1400 to 2000 just for the engine

If you're buying an engine from the wreckers you better be prepared for the unexpected.
The kilometres are anyone's guess, it's been smashed, the maintenance history is a mystery.
False economy IMHO

I'd check the prices for a new engine directly from Mitsubishi if you're going to buy a reco engine.
My ex-wife fried the engine in my 1st gen 20 years ago and a new engine was cheaper by about $100 than a reconditioned engine :)
Never know, the price difference may not be substantial between the 2 and worth it for peace of mind. Then again, a 2nd hand engine from a known source with known service history would be far cheaper and serve the same purpose.

Hmmm...lots of food for thought.

I bought a TS V6 3 years ago and the day after I bought it the timing belt broke and the pistons hit the valves, I got a price from repco and it was $4000 LOL. I kept an eye out on ebay for a motor, took a long time for one to come up that wasn't too far away, 12 months later one did come up, it was near Gosford and I'm Bathurst, a guy bought the car for parts and he was selling the motor, he told me looks like the heads had been done by the previous owner, I won the bid for $152, its was a gamble though, I fitted all new gaskets, seals and timing belt before I fitted it to the car, that was 18 months ago and its going great, uses no oil and blows no smoke, the motor had done 275,000 k's in the car it came out of but sense the heads had been done up it was fine. It was a gamble that payed off. Hope you find a good motor, cheers

Four grand from Repco! Jeeze!
The reason I have asked about reconditioned engines is this...
My TS V6 wagon is generating a bit of valve ticking on startup. It's getting on to 197,00km old. Power-wise she's great. The auto transmission (touch wood) is still smooth as silk. I know that the timing belt is due soon. So I know that's around $800, once you factor changing the water pump as well. If the valve clatter is indicative of something else playing up in the head area then I'm at a bit of a quandary. Should I keep the thing or trade it in???
The body's straight, as is the upholstery...no rust and everything works, including the air conditioner.
I've got a chance at buying a well-looked after Falcon BF wagon (2004) with 44,000km on the odo for 10 grand. Should i go for it or stick with the Magna, bite the bullet and spend the dough doing her up???
Decisions, decisions!!!:tired:

The v6 has a belt, it wouldn't be ticking unless its starting fall apart, the 2.6 4 cylinder had a chain.

Is she blowing any smoke at all? use oil? a diffrent oil may help with the valves ticking, and if its only on start up I wouldn't worry too much. It sounds like its still a great car, these motors last for ages with care, the only thing that can need replacing besides the timing belt can be the valve stem oils seals, these little buggers are the main reason these cars blow smoke and not the rings. If you want a new car go with the Ford otherwise just spend the grand on the timing belt and water pump and your Magna will be good for another 100,000 k's

The old 12 valve v6 does tend to rattle in the valve lifters. I replaced all my lifters, and guess what? It still rattles sometimes at start up. Doesn't do any harm, your engine is not being harmed by it.
Timing belt - seeing a lot of people go over the 100,000 km or 5 years recommended by Mitsu - like double the time lol - there's probably no need to hurry, unless you are already a few years over.

Deano/MadMax...thanks for your ideas. A lot to think about here. MadMax: My TJ Solara only has 34,000kay on it. She's only driven short distances and spend a lot of her time in the garage, "asleep". Being that she's from 2001 I suppose the timing belt should have been changed ages ago! Ooops!

Sorry, Tunerequired, the post does look confusing, when read in isolation. I have TWO Magnas...one is a TS V6 wagon which is the subject of all the other posts in this thread. I also have a TJ Solara (the one in my Avatar pic) 3.5 which has travelled nominal Kays (34,000). The question in my last post was a quick aside to MadMagna...all I wanted to know was whether I still had to change my cam belt on the TJ because 10 years had gone by, despite the fact the car's only done 34,000K.
Sorry for the confusion. My bad!
