Hello.

I hooked my sub up last night but it is radically under-volume for what it should be. I remember someone posting here before with a similar problem and the consensus was that his earth wire was crap. I'm prepared to accept that but I've tried about four different bolts for earthing and haven't noticed a difference. Also, the splits I have running off the same amp are loud as, but I guess a sub needs a lot more power and therefore current to produce high volume, right?

I can crank it and the sub will get loud but the splits are 3 times louder.. the amp doesn't heat up and shut down at all..

I've tried measuring if there is a voltage drop between the negative terminal on the amp and the battery post but no go there.

Any ideas how I can narrow down the problem, or can someone tell me exactly which bolt in the boot they used for grounding and any preparation they did to it?

Thanks.

Mine's just under a screw on the left hand side of the boot floor... What are the specs on ur amp/sub and what kinda guage cabling have u used? there could be an issue there...

The amp is an Audison SRx3 (http://www.audison.it/prodotti.asp?lang=eng&idlinea=5&idprodotto=49) and the sub is a Diamond Audio M3121.4 - basically a 12" 4ohm sub with a nominal handling of 200W RMS. With a 4ohm load the amp should be running at 2 x 75W for the front channels and 1 x 250W for the sub.

Power cable is 8 gauge I think and it all came from Fhrx so I'm going to guess he picked the right spec for it whatever it is :D

The speaker cable I've got going to the sub isn't as thick as it could be.. could that be an issue?

Have you set the gain on the amplifier??

You sure that it isn't just all connected perfectly - but you have forgotten to set the amp to the sysem??

There should be a gain setting - I haven't looked at the amp specs - but it should either be a little dial, or an electronic switch - I am sure Marty will be able to sort out where it is - but basically it sounds from your symptoms you haven't set the gain.

Roughly setting the gain - the way I was instucted on how to do it - and how I have always done it since then (as i was told this by a caraudio mate of mine) turn the gain on the amp down to nothing, turn the stereo up to about 3/4 of the maximum volume, then set the gain, keep putting it up higher, until it starts to distort, then turn it back a bit, then you should find that you can pretty much max out your stereo - without the distortion setting in.

Marty "FHRX" please - let me know if I am on the right path here - and if this is correct - also I had a quick look at the amp picture on the link - but the photo is too small to see all the writing on the dials to see which ones are the gain - though I think they are on the left hand side, about a 1/3 of the way in from the edge, and are two little dials - i think i can read settings or something near them.
