View Full Version : Magnas! I am starting to think they are ****

So I bought a verada a couple of months ago even though so many told me they are problems, well I like beating the odds and I bought one.

I think it’s a nice comfy car and I like it but the problems!

Ever since I had it, its idle is crap! I have taken it to so many mechanics, auto electrics I have literally spent thousands on the damn thing!

75% of electrical has been replaced that can possibly interfere with the idle

Just to name a few

02 SENSOR
AIC MOTOR

New timing kit has been put through, the new motor has only done around 170k (which is not extremely bad) spark plugs, leads, dizzie cap, coils etc etc

It has had a tunes up, the idling has been adjusted (base idle etc)

The gear box has been rebuilt from tip to toe.

Nearly everything on the outside of the motor has been replaced!

I got the fuel injections cleaned the other day as recommend by mits-fix plus the top end of the motor, the Mechanic said they were very dirty (I got the ultimate clean they call it)

Now ever since I have done that its WORSE!!!

My idle has really gone down the drain and power? What power? I have to put the foot right down to get anywhere now.

So now idle is more crap, power has dropped, and my gears are not going in as smoothly as it use to.

After much research (friends call me a Google Mechanic :facejump:)

The TPS can do all of the above? When she gets up to a certain RPM she seems to fly as per normal!

If anyone has any other suggestions I am more than happy to listen!

Yes, MAF clean, TPS adjustment, ISC functionality have a big bearing on the way a third gen runs.

lol Bought a second gen years ago, real cheap, as it had gearbox "Symptoms" like it was about to die, a simple TPS adjustment made it run and change gears smoothly. Still running well 4 years later.

OP really needs to find a mechanic who knows what he is doing, or start learning for himself how to fix a neglected Magna. lol

A faulty TPS sensor wouldnt help the car idle cleanly

Not to mention being a KE it would actually have a 6G74 so the above discussion is moot.

I'm sure Pretzil found it enlightening.

Anyway, OP needs to check the TPS for correct functioning and adjustment, then move on to spark plugs and leads, then do a compression test, perhaps check cam timing. It's all in the manual. Could be a failing ignition coil in the distributor, but do the simple/cheap checks first. A neglected car needs time and patience to get it back up to scratch, that's why they are cheap to buy! lol

OP you need a decent mechanic. Hopefully all the above items have been covered but make sure. You may have spent thousands hunting for a $20 fix, ahh well at least it's less to go wrong in the future.

Btw remember that all cars with high kms will have issues. The higher the kms, the longer the car has had to be mistreated.

Things I would be checking/trying are:

- MAF Sensor
- ISC Motor
- TPS Adjustment
- ECU Reset
- Vacuum Leak

Who cares about how many valves this car has

What gets me is someone is here for 2 mins and pretty much putting down a whole range of cars based on a single car that is now 15 years old

Is great you went against the odds BUT dont complain when your high mileage ( assume it is due to having new motor) car is not as new. 75% of electrics changed. Perhaps time to find a person who can look properly at real issues like engine mounts etc and if you are a google mechanic ( wont even say what i am really thinking at that one) then you would see that these cars are not the best for idle

Also you claim no power have tou considered getting the main issue fixed first?

HI Madmagna,

Just becuase i said i am a google machanic does not mean i do anything, i leave it up to the real machanics for that so dont take it sersoiusly! I dont touch any machanical bits on my car!...

yes i have done my research regarding the idle, but surely there is a fix for it somewhere? just can't say the idle is going to stay like that and nothing you can do about it, thats crazy. just have to find exactly what is causing it.

as for the no power, yes its going to the machencs again this week that did the Fuel injection clean.

thanks guys for your input, i will get her perfect one day!

What exactly is so crap about the idle? And have you had the idle reset by someone using a MUTT II?

Unfortunately you are victim to what I call "replace everything" mechanics.

I found a good mechanic here in WA that is not like this, saves you lots of time and money, unfortunately I don't know who to recommend where you live. For example I had all sorts of weird issues with power etc and warm starts on my old 2nd gen that turned out to be the TPS.. having had all sorts of stuff replaced by another mechanic I took it to this guy who identified the TPS very quickly only cost me about $100 all up to sort out then including labour. Having taken several other problems on other cars to him since he is very quick to identify/fix things.. smart guy. (http://vehiclefleetservices.com.au/)

If you have no power TPS could be a culprit but like I said you really need to find someone who can test it properly.

Awesome man, I'll give him a try! Been waiting for someone like that here in WA.

@Verada KE, the cars are old so they do have problems. I'm not sure whether Magnas in particular have poorly designed engines but they do run great aannnd look great. Chances are your car was needing some good attention when you bought it. Its worth asking why it was sold in the first place. Mine cost me more than the car in repairs since I bought it, does get annoying but when its running like a charm, its the best value for money and power you'll get right now, and they envy of many! Hope you get your problems solved mate, thats why we're all here
