I know a lot of you guys like to debadge, where it says "M I T S U B I S H I" across the thin strip above the rear number plate.

But on the TR the letters aren't badges, the garnish is one single piece of plastic and the letters are painted on the inside, with a different texture on the plastic surrounding it. And also, I like Mitsubishi, I want to show it off, not debadge it.

So I've taken the garnish off (after much struggle, it was screwed, bolted, clipped and glued on) and sanded off the paint on the letters (the plastic of the letters is raised, so it's easy to get off) now I'm going to touch up the letters to make sure they're perfect and respray the rest of it black so that the letters really stand out. Then I'm putting a purple neon behind the garnish, so the word "M I T S U B I S H I" will be glowing purple or red on the garnish above the number plate.

I dunno if anyone's ever done it before, but I think it's a nice idea and I'll upload pics when it's finished.

Any feedback on the idea so far?

just remember and aftermarket red or blue exterior lights are considered illegal when the car is in motion as these are considered emergency colors

def post some pics of how it turned out

Red's ok if it's at the back of your car. I really doubt you'd get pinged for lighting up your garnish, as long as it wasn't over the top (ie similar to your tail lights in intensity).

Yeah I'll definitely upload the pics. Sanding got annoying so we're using brake fluid to strip the paint haha.

All the paint has been stripped, we just need to touch it up a bit and respray everything but the letters (the background was originally grey, we're spraying it black)

brake fluid? just make sure the paint will stick to it in the future, and make sure to upload some completed pics

i tried to do the same thing as this, altho i wanted to add an led brake light or extra tail lights instead of a neon.

i had probs getting the garnish apart, got it off, but cracked the reflector thingy (red piece) trying to get it apart :c

how'd you go about gettin it off?

We undid a couple of bolts on the inside of the boot, then took the number plate off, and the whole thing came out; the garnish and the plastic backing. The backing was a bitch to get off, it was like a frame, it's what bolted onto the boot, there were heaps of clips, we pushed them in and started pulling it off, but it was glued on all the way around, we ran a box-cutter through it, pushed all the clips and it came apart easy.
