hi,
i recently bought a 97 ke verada xi. It didn't come with a keyless remote, i went to the locksmith to buy a new one, only to find there was two different kinds for the KE. I'm not sure whether it's the three button remote or the one button remote. has anyone get any idea which one it would be? I know it has an alarm, as i set it off accidentally the other day.
thanks.

An Xi would have to have more features that require more buttons on the remote though

Yeah an XI has a different remote to an EI because, of the ETACS system. The remote is a three button one with a red light indicator.

Hi mate, I need a new remote too, do you mind telling me how much it cost? I've just been putting it off for ages lol.

Here's one http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GENUINE-MITSUBISHI-KEYLESS-ENTRY-REMOTE-VERADA-SIGMA-/330557689532?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cf6c60ebc#ht_500wt_1156
And when you do get a new remote and wonder why the hell following the instructions in the car manual won't get the car into programming mode, follow these instructions:
http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/605/remotecontrolimage148o.jpg
The 'data link connector' (or OBD) is under the dash on the drivers side -- more towards the centre console, slide your seat back and have a look with a torch
Ground pin 1 of the OBD plug as shown in the picture (pin 4 is ground -- so jumper pins 1 & 4)

i bought a remote today. got it from the locksmith cost me $90, took it back to the car, and tried to program it with the instructions from both the locksmith and in my manual. both didn't work.
locksmith came out and he couldn't get it to work either. he gave me my money back, and told me to take it to mitsubishi.

Mine dident work, i took it to mitsubishi, They had to manualy program it cost me $45 ! For some reason the KE's (not sure about the rest) wont do it by the key instructions.
Sorry to hear that, $45 is such a rip off to simply program a remote.
I have a KF Xi Verada and the turn key from off to acc 5 times (or whatever is described in the user manual) doesn't work either. My understanding is that this will not work on KE and KF veradas.
The instructions I posted on the previous page of this thread are the only way I'm aware of programming a remote to a KE/KF verada, and this is the exact method used in Mitsubishi service centres.
When you followed the instructions, did the car enter programming mode at all, ie: did the indicators flash?
From memory all the doors have to be shut.
If the car did enter program mode and you still couldn't program the remote, then it is the incorrect remote for your car (ie: operates at different frequency)
EDIT: I just re-read your post. You tried programming it using the method in your manual and via the instructions the locksmith gave you. Did you try the method I posted? I posted that information preemptively when I saw you were looking for a new remote as I invisaged you would have trouble programming it (because everyone does).

i don't assume that it entered programming mode, the indicators didn't flash or anything. but apparently they don't flash until it has actually entered the remote.
i havn't tried your method yet, i will try tomorrow though. do you know how i can find it, i had a quick look and there is a million things up there! hahaha

Im not sure about KE/KF XI's but all other third gens flash the indicators when entering the programing mode and when a button is pressed on the remote to tell you that it has been programmed.
When car enters program mode - doors lock & unlock.
When remote programmed - doors lock and unlock again.
The data link connecter (OBD plug) isn't too hard to find when you know where to look (make sure you slide your drivers seat all the way back so you have plenty of room).
I took some photos to explain where it is.
1st photo - drivers side footwell (note the plastic stud holding the carpet in place, I circled it in green)

2nd photo - zoom in further (can still see plastic stud and now also the data link connector which is circled in red)

3rd photo - close up of data link connector (pin 1 needs to be grounded as per instructions & pin 4 happens to be chassis ground, so connect pins 1 & 4 with a small bit of insulated wire).

Good Luck!
EDIT: I don't think the blinkers flash when entering programming mode (not sure) but the doors definately lock and unlock

Hey guys. Couple of quick questions. I have a remote and am trying to program it, and am just struggling to get the car to enter programming mode. I tried the method in the manual first just in case (and it didn't work...). I have also tried the method karj has outlined above. When I connect pin 1 and 4 of the OBD I still can't enter programming mode. But, when the ignition is in the ON position though the [N] (as in Neutral) light on the dash flashes on and off (Car is in Park still obviously). So, it's obviously recognized 'something' by connecting the pins. But not what I wanted it to do... help!?!?
@Blazin'
Not sure why it won't work for you.
I just tried it again with my 1998 KF Xi Verada and the steps below work for me.
1. Earth pin 1 of OBD by connecting to pin 4
2. Close all doors and sit in drivers seat
3. Put key in ignition, turn to accessories (wait a few seconds) turn back to off
4. Doors lock & unlock -- car has entered programming mode.
If I turn the key to 'on' while pins 1 & 4 are connected, my 'N' light flashses as well.
I have no idea why it doesn't work for you.
Anyone else got any ideas?

Thanks mate, I'll give it one more go lol! Just in some random hope that it will decide to work haha. I was leaving it on 'on' and waiting for the indicators to flash. I'll try it this way and get back to ya on it!

Hmm, still no luck... Wierd 'cos we both have the EXACT same model. I don't see why there'd be any difference.
I did it this way, same as you I believe.
1. Connect pin 1 and 4.
2. Insert key, and twist to 'ACC'.
3. Twist back to 'LOCK'.
I sit in darkness for a few seconds... nothing... Wierd! Maybe I'll try it again tomorrow morning and it might just randomly decide to work.... haha. Thanks again karj for your help though, I will crack it eventually! :P
@Blazin'
Yeah it is weird.
I should just clarify: I'm not sure if the indicators flash when entering program mode, but you would definately hear the doors lock and unlock after you turn the key back to off.

Hi all I have just purchased a 3 button remote from Mitsu,MR909973. I sat in my KH Verada e1 switched from Acc to On 3 times in 5 seconds, quickly pressed the unlock button on the remote. All done ,3 buttons operate perfectly. Hope others have success with this method without having to get to shorting pins 1 & 4 under the dash etc.
Regards
Norman
