hey does anyone know where to get those chrome clip on strips?

I had a look at places like super cheap, repco and autobarn. But none of them seem to have it. They've only got the chrom door trim which is really thin and only chrome on one side.

Use chrome tape if you can find it, I last got it from Autobarn, lasted years.

If you do go for tape, I just checked today and it's cheaper to go to Autobarn than any from ebay. 10m of 12mm chrome tape from Autobarn is $13, cheapest I could find on ebay is $20 shipped. I used this stuff on my 2nd gen grille, if applied with attention to detail you wouldn't know it's not proper chrome. I'm picking up a TL in a few days, and pretty sure this is one of the first things I'll do to it.

Yep, I think it's pinstriping tape or some-such, found some pics of when I installed it; 3rd pic shows all bar one slat done, I'd previously used chrome spraypaint which needless to say did turn out very chromie. I'd say it ust have been 12mm tape, as per above (called my "local" today to see if they had it, hence the price)

Well I've had it on that grille for probably 4+ years, and it's still as good as the day it went on! And note that that's on a badly painted surface that wasn't prepped at all, on a clean stock plastic it should work even better.

aww thats heaps awesome! I went and bought some today. Looks like you did a pretty good job of yours. The only thing is cause the tape's only 12mm thick, it only covers the front of the grille slat. And on the TF grille the slats are pretty deep so the back behind it is still exposed. And being diaginally spread out makes it pretty visable to. Was yours like that?
Lol i went and bought my TH grille today. Thinking of macthing the grille chrome or spray painting the black slats white to match with the rest of the car. Any thoughts??

Should still look fine with just the leading edge, as you can see in parts of the first two pics, the KS grille slats are at least an inch deep. Dunno, worked for me, your mileage may vary!

hey in the end how'd your grille turn out anyway?? Like i've done half of mine, but its so hare not to get like bubbles and imperfections when you mask it on. Like i reakon it looks good when its in cause it has a dark backin to it but, but up real close you'l notice somethints shonkys goin on lol

Well, got my TL last week, and first "mod" Friday night was the chrome tape on the grille. Rather time consuming; the old KS grille had 14 slats, this sucker's got 34! Took about 2hrs, but at least you can do it while sitting watching TV.

Took a lot of experimentation before I decided on a method; the "stepped" slat, and the rounded ends, mean it's a right royal pain. Decided to stop and start the tape only on the straight of the slat (no rounded ends), and started the tape edge on the leading edge of the "step", on the visible side of the slat. The other edge of the tape goes up the back side of the slat, no-one's going to see it so doesn't matter how neat it is back there.

Not sure how this one will hold up though. Seems the narrow slat may be too much fold for the tape to handle, ie. it's wrapping around ~1mm radius, whereas the KS was a couple of mm thick. Have already had one delaminate partially, will see how it stands up to time, have found some "U shape" chrome mouldings on ebay for about $5 shipped for 1m, may be another way to go.

Here's the result:

Not sure if it is easier to paint chrome on the grill. However, note that due to a few scratches made by small stone chips on my black grill, I noticed that it is actually chrome under the matt black paint. Have always thought about slowly scratching away the black paint on the leading edge.

Not sure what you've got there Vlad, mine's quite definitely just black injection-moulded plastic. Did you have yours from new? Maybe the previous owner sprayed the Verada chrome grille black!

In my experience, chrome paint never turns out chrome, in fact it turns out worse than silver!
Good luck finding anywhere that would even talk to you RE: getting a grille electroplated, there might be the odd place but pretty certain it would cost a small fortune.
The latest lot of chrome strip on ebay is going for about $3 for 3m, need two lots. So $6 and some time in front of the tele vs. a couple of hundred in electroplating...
Also I believe that there is such a thing as too much chrome; you want subtle juxtapositions of light and dark. Chroming the edges of the slats still allows the dark of the grille to contrast. The electroplaters can mask off areas to not be plated, but that will add a hell of a lot of work, which in turn means a hell of a lot of money.

Haven't had much free time to redo the grille with the new strips, have completed one half, will do the other "one day". These strips are a few mm thick, so the chrome effect is more apparent. Easier to work with, quicker to apply, more of a "gum" glue rather than a double-sided tape, so you can rearrange it a bit after sticking. Only pain is that the seller rolls up the strip, so it's not straight, you can straighten it OK if you find the right method, one side will be a bit crinkled though, so use than on the "underside" of the slat where it won't be noticed.

Nah, mine got damaged recently and the brand new replacement is exactly the same. Black paint over the slats and the chrome edge is unpainted as well as the back side. Will take photos of it. I've since replaced them with full chrome ones bought from eBay second hand. The seller will offer 10% to AMC members after I mentioned AMC to him.

u guys could just go to your local sign shop and ask for a bit of chrome vinyl, might work out cheaper and probably even better quality ( depending on sign shop) they might even give you a piece of scrap for free!!
