Hey guys

my car is coming up for it 200k service, just need to know what needs doing? the little spanner symbol is now up on the dash and its sitting on 194,500kms?

Timing belt? does the tensioner need doing?
Spark plugs?
Air filter
Oil/filter?

what approx cost am i looking at?

Is there anything else that needs doing? i did the auto service a few months ago so that should be ok for some time to come.

Thanks in advance

It's the big service - at 200,000 km most people suggest replacing all of the moving parts under the timing cover in one go, water pump, belt, idlers, hydraulic tensioner - if you are paying someone to do it its best to do the whole lot to avoid having to go in there again. Coolant, oil, filters, spark plugs, trans flush, all need doing but check your last service to see if any of them have already been done. Also ask them to check driveshaft boots, steering rack boots, and look for leaks in shockers and exhaust system.

Hope you have the cash, anything up to $2K. (Of course, DIY is much cheaper)

Maybe get a quote from Madmagna? (If he is local to you)

ok...

ive got a family friend who lives a few doors down doing the work, he doesn't rip us off

Think i will stick to basics

timing belt and tensioner
Oil and filter
fuel filter
Air filter

the rest seems ok the coolant etc is all still green and not dirty!

I wanna keep costs down as i don't know how long im keeping it for

Get him to check the belt idlers on the outside belts too, just in case.

Coolant? If it gets dirty then the damage has been done, you really need to change it on a time basis, not colour or dirtyness. lol

If you were to sell it to me, I'd ask if the timing belt and idlers etc have been done, and can I see a receipt please? If it is missing important detail - like no new water pump - I'd walk away quickly. lol Do it properly to maintain the resale value of your car.

P.S. If you really want to keep costs down, ask him where he gets the parts and how much they cost. There are some sources of cheap parts around.

if you are spending that sort of money, make sure you get the water pump replaced. it might cost an extra $150 but in the long run it will save you. we got the timing belt done on our 98 pajero, had it done at 190,000km with water pump, then at 250,000km timing belt was done again and engine had major work done, but we didnt replace water pump, 5,000km later the water pump needed doing.

I can supply parts cheaper than you can get from most other places

Dont forget sparkplugs, fuel filter etc etc

Just becuase coolant is green may be due, same with brake fluid
