My RA is due a service (Been over a year without one) and due to it only having 36,000 kms it is still on its first camshafts/crack seals, timing belt and other belts. I'm going to take it to my mechanic and get him to replace all that needs replacing + the oil and the 3 front spark plugs.
I also want the gearbox oil changed but it has an LSD equipped gearbox so what oil needs to be used? He isn't a stupid mechanic but if he didn't realise it needs different oil all hell could break loose.
So umm what oil needs to be used?? haha
How much does a gearbox oil change usually cost?
Cheers fellas.

TJ Ralliart service manual specifies Hypoid gear oil SAE 75w-85W conforming to A.P.I.classification GL-4 for the manual transmission. It uses 2.8 litres.

Would 75w-90w be ok for the LSD box as I've been given a bottle

Should be fine, most important thing is that its GL-4.
Cheers Luke

I downloaded the manual and the manual gearbox oil for a Tj non-LSD is the same as the Ralliart, that either means an LSD doesn't need special oil or that service manual you told me to download is wrong.
I really don't wanna eff my gearbox by getting the mechanic to put the wrong oil in. What's going on??

For peace of mind give Mitsubishi a call in the morning.

The 'mitsubishi logbook servicing site' doesn't even have a 3.5L tj in their system but instead 3.0L Tjs, this is so screwed.

I'd love to help you by telling you what i replaced my oil with...
But my gearbox is currently at a specialist because my LSD decided it had put up with my s*** for long enough and, tragically, took it's own life when i was pulling away from a set of lights.
Now would be a good time to mention that i was specifically being gentle on the diff because i knew they were not cheap things to replace, and that when i was pulling away from the lights i was grannying it so hard i could get to perth from sydney on half a tank.
Yeah, make damn sure you get the right oil. I'm almost certain that's what killed my one.
Actually, you want to bring your car into our shop for the service?
I'll do it cheap, specially for you. You know what? I'll be a mate and do it for free, providing you gloss over the fact that your car only lights up 1 wheel afterward.

Holy shit, how many people have blown up quaife LSD's?! I was seriously contemplating ordering one from the US for $1.2k (including reversed ring gear). Do you normally abuse your gearbox?!?!

Ive been running Redline MT90 in my ralliart LSD equipped manual gearbox since 2006, before that i used Castrol VMX-M 75W/85 Mineral gear oil which is same as the factory fill oil or if you prefer to use a synthetic version of that oil then Castrol Syntrans 75W/85 is the one.

The Redline MT90 was good I'm currently using Motul LSD something or other and it is great :)

Sounds like something was done incorrectly (box rebuild, wrong fluid, etc...) as there has not been a single report of a broken ralliart diff yet (Even with TZABOY pumping 14psi of boost through a supercharged forged 3.5 and doing constant kids and motorsport events).

That's what i was bloody thinking, i thought it was close to impossible to kill the standard diffs unless you were running double the factory power and dumped the clutch everywhere with semi-slicks or something.
Could it have anything to due with the fact that my (almost brand new) clutch+flywheel (380, exedy) are stuffed and will need to be replaced?
My best guess is that the fluid has been completely wrong, and that's why my car will be sitting with no gearbox for a week or longer while i spend the cost of a holiday to, say, Hawaii on fixing my car.
Redline MT90 sounds like the way to go, then.

Although i thought the standard diffs were hard to kill, i still knew how much they cost to replace and for that very reason was gentle on my box most of the time. Ask my mates who were with me for most trips, one of the most common phrases i said was 'no man i'm being careful with the LSD because they're expensive as hell to replace'. That was the usual reply to requests for burnouts.

LSD doesn't need a special oil, same as the quaife, just runs with whatever else the gearbox has.
No need for 'lsd' oil or similar, I understand this is due to the fact its not a clutch pack LSD.
As caz_375 said the most important thing is GL4.

My WaveTrac LSD has just been sent to my gearbox place to get installed/get box reco'd. It says on the paperwork not to use "redline shockproof" or anything with friction modifiers or any gearbox additives. Apparently its meant to be the same with all torsen LSD etc WaveTrac, OBX etc..
I have a whole spare bottle of Nulon SAE80 "Smoothshift", and I was wondering if I should use Smoothshift or switch to something else like MT90...
Also, where can I get MT90 in Sydney?!

TJ,
I got my MT90 three weeks ago from here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170497354171&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:AU:1123
$95 for 1 US gallon (= just under 4 litres, just right for a 380 manual, probably enough for your manual box as well).
I paid an extra $20 for postage to SA (my guess as he's a bit vague on postage cost).
But he's in Sydney (Eastwood) and the page says 'cash if pick up' so you should be able to pick it up from him & save on postage.
