Hey guys,
Had some problems with my air con compressor bearings at the beginning of the year, finally getting around to sorting it out. Bought a compressor and booking it in this week.
Just wanted to know if its legal for me to work on the air con system to swap the compressors once the system has been degassed?
Basically I wanted to drive in, de-gas. Drive home and fit new compressor then go back to get it re-gassed as I figure this will be cheaper then paying for labour for them to fit it.
Cheers.
In Qld it's legal to do what you outline, and I'd guess it's the same in other states. Make sure the aircon shop will also go along with your plan - some baulk at regassing units that have been "played with" Also make sure you have the correct "O" rings for the changeover......I guess you'll get them to add the PAG oil?

Hmm I'll have to see about the O rings, and yeah they will add the oil.
Thanks for the reply.

You are probably aware of this but when doing a compressor swap or any procedure concerning A/C's, you must be very careful that no dirt or moisture enters the system. All connections must be spotlessly clean, use new "O" rings (blue), check for tension of connections which if overtightened will split. The PAG oil used in A/C's is very hygroscopic just like brake fluid so you must keep the connectors on the new compressor sealed. Once the PAG oil gets contaminated with moisture it can become corrosive.
Please note I am not trying to dissuade you from doing the swap (I would do it too), just fore-warning you of what to watch out for. Good Luck.
