After a little debate in my mind i decided that i'm going to change the rear muffler of my Ralliart for something a little smaller and straight through.

I also decided to purchase a hi-flow Metal Cat and it should come in the mail very soon :)

I spoke to a local exhaust shop and the bloke said he will install the hi-flow cat (welding it in) and replace the rear muffler with something smaller and put on duel 3inch tips for $350. (With stock RA tip $280)

I asked what muffler he could provide and he said whatever he has in stock which would be a small 'Sports muffler' or a 'small redback'. This is obviously getting away from the usual Lukey and Redback bolt ons.

Has anyone has experience using these sorts of mufflers?. They obviously aren't very expensive ( $150-$200) I really haven't heard a magna with one of these mufflers before so just praying it will sound good.

After i'm done The RA system will be as hi-flowed as possible without changing the extractors.
I'll let you guys know how i go with it but if anybody has any opinions on the cheaper mufflers post it up! I don't want to get something i'll regret.

Mind you it's only really cheap when compared to a magnaflow muffler ($400) which held my original thoughts but i decided to just throw all my money on red and see how it comes out.

Aw yeah i noticed that last night. I presume a small redback would be similar then. Might try the 'sports' muffler.

Not exactly a response to your qu, but I had a smallish, expensive, brand name muffler fitted to my car and it sounded loud, droney and rubbish. Smaller muffler = more noise. If that's what you like, then all well and good, but personally I couldn't stand it. I think the M/flow mufflers are pretty overrated.

Yes well. The RA exhaust had an extra muffler compared to stock (VRX). So it is slightly more quiet then stock until around 3000 revs then screams after that. Drone should be not to much of a problem.
I will be keeping my stock muffler so if it annoys me to much but i think thats the benefit of getting a cheap muffler. It's not a huge loss if i don't like it.

My basic plan at the moment is to do remove the extra muffler and bolt on a Varex rearmost one, maybe do the cat later if i get a tune.

I was originally gonna go full system and cat, but after feeling how much torque my current manual has i really don't want to wreck that.
Remember that Varex mufflers act more or less like a straight pipe when completely open, and i had a quick listen to mine when we ripped the rear muffler off for a minute to plug up a hole for blue-slip (:ninja:) and it sounded insanely good.

The flipside is that if it's only a cheap muffler, there's a chance you won't like it.

My parents had Mercury mufflers put on their VE SS at a whopping $90 per muffler. They didn't sound bad at first (it's a V8 after all lol), but they later replaced it with a custom muffler, and it sounds about 100x better.

Custom Muffler?? Sounds expensive haha. HI Flow cat came. Venom Metal Cat. I liturally can blow into it and it all comes out the other side, very very efficient.

LOL! Sounds good.

In regards to mufflers, yes straight through smaller mufflers are louder. It depends on whether you want loud/quiet, or deep/tinny. Whatever type or size you go for, please please PLEASE make sure you at least have a resonator or two in the mid section so it doesn't sound like a tan can when you're taking off :)

Haha and i gather NO BOOSHEET?

The Ralliart has an extra muffler then the average sports/VRX exhaust so that makes 3 in total. I guess that's a good thing.
