View Full Version : Metal bits in transmission fluid

Changed my transmission fluid today and found the below metal bits in it. The car is a 2005 KW Verada with 75k. It has been running perfectly and haven't noticed any problems with the transmission. Tried searching and couldn't find anything. I know it's probably going to be bad news, however does anyone know what the bits are from?

If it's an auto do a thread search for "wave spring problems".

Cheers

Thanks. Shame the warranty only ran out 6 months ago.

These are part of your wave spring, I would redump the fluid and poke a magnet in the drian hole to make sure you got all the bits out

I have done 2 trans flushes this week and in both found the same bits, is fairly common but if you get them all the trans may go for ages yet, but may stop tomorrow as well

The bit on the far right looks to be the end of the spring by the square cut end, if this is the case hopefully it will stop where it has and not continue, it is when these get picked up in the fluid and hit the oil pump that it all comes to a grinding halt

Just checked the bits and all have broken edges, so from what you're saying there are probably more bits floating around. I'll dump the fluid again and check. Is $1,200 a reasonable price to replace it.

So $1200 for a seconhand item fitted or a trans that has had a revised spring installed, going by std rates most places charge these days the quote is not too bad, allow between $600 - $800 for a secondhand unit from most wreckers and then fitting would generally be $300 to $400

Anyone know where I can get a magnet on a Sunday that will do the job?

Try Autobarn or the like. You can buy those long prong like devices with a magnet on the end that are used for getting things out of hard to reach places.

Something like this should do the trick...

Thanks. Can anyone recommend a transmission specialist on the south side of Brisbane?

@Sprinter... I'd probs try ringing or visiting a few trans places that are convenient to you and ask if they are aware of the Wave Spring problem that claims lots of Magna boxes. If they seem to know about it, I'd feel more confident about them. If you get a few that sound like they know about it, guess-timates of repair cost would be my next consideration.

When my KJ came to a sudden halt, folks at work recommended one business. I had car towed there, and they were well-aware and suggested the wave spring before the car was off the tow-truck. Next morning they were able to show me the broken bits and the damage they caused. They were a smallish family business - and after the "quote shock" I let them proceed. They now do the servicing of box and rego checks on both my cars. A few yrs ago, was $2200- to pull down my trans and rebuild with solid wave-spring and replace any damaged parts elsewhere. My box only had 57K on it, so I did not bother getting other things like solenoids changed (that was an option they also presented).

Does anyone know how much it costs to get the revised spring fitted, vs running it till destruction? Is there anything else worth doing while the box is out?
My 2002 TJ has 140,000km on it so I'm expecting it to let go sometime before 200,000km.

Really depends on what damage has been done as there are a few other issues with the Magna Transmissions aside from teh spring, I have seen a few with loose or failing pack nut, this is a big mutha of a nut in the unit and causes a lot of issue if comes loose.

The remove and refit is about $400, my trans guy will fit a new wave spring if there is no other damage for around the $600 mark, as stated, that is provided everything else inside is in good condition

I thought the springs with the issue were much thinner than pictured and the pictured ones look like the revised springs???

I'm getting it done for $1,200 provided there is no other damage. My spring is definitely the old one. A bit annoying as it was one of the last Veradas manufactured, so I would have expected a revised spring to have been fitted.

How thick are they? I thought the bad ones were much thinner with cylindrical cross-section.

It's the same thickness as the top picture.

According to http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88138&p=1394632&viewfull=1#post1394632, Your 2005 KW has the revised wave spring hence the thicker rectangular cross-section which can still break.

I can assure you that it is definitely the old type as it is identical in thickness to the top picture.

Just butting in here, but maybe it's had a gearbox change at some stage with an older model gearbox? Do you know the full history of the car?

There was a thread on here with pics of both the thinner ones and the revised ones. Cannot find it. Someone please find it or post it up please.....

The car was bought from the government auctions. There's nothing in the paperwork stating the transmission has been changed at all.

An ex Mitsubishi mechanic told me that if the transmission was changed by Mitsubishi they would have added / stamped the letter "R" for recond to the transmission serial number.

Cheers

The transmission place that did the repair confirmed it was definitely the old type of spring.
