Hi there, just popped in to my friendly Tonkins store in Modbury getting a new aerial fitted to the UHF (glass mount) and the bonnet mount repaired (stupid vandals).

The manager was giving a test run of Eclipse stuff for a customer. Headunits looked good, but I was absolutely blown away by teh performance of the 4" 2 way and 6x9" 3 way speakers.

He tells me Fujitsu have dropped their prices on all speakers to compete with Pioneer/Sony/Alpine for price.

I picked up some 6x9" 3 way speakers for rear parcel shelf for $99 on the spot, and am waiting for old stock of 4" 2 way to come in for $199. They are releasing 3 way 4" soon, however with dome tweeters already in my dash they'll be wasted.

Anyway if you're a treble rider like me and really appreciate strumming guitars, sharp horns, driving percussion and sweet vocals then you are gonna love these speakers!
Sound was sharp through most ranges, when flicking the same tracks onto a pioneer speaker setup all percussion sounded like they were beating a wet carboard box with a stick ... not nice at all. Anyway I was super impressed with the Eclipse that I bought speakers on teh spot to replace all round in my beast.

ive had a set of eclipse 5.25" splits in the front doors of my car for nearly 12 months now and i am still impressed with the clarity of them, so i am sure that you are going to enjoy these Preacher Man!

well i can't fault eclipse, they are awesome. We (me and my house mate) listened to a pair of eclipse entry level 6.5" 2 ways against the pioneer bullet splitsand the eclipse blew it out of the water.. Hence me never recommending pioneer bullet splits ever again. They sounded killer.
BTW Dave, are you still selling your splits? I might know someone who is interested.

Cheers,
Cam.

Well. I finally installed the 6x9s. ONly took me 1.5 weeks to get around to it.
What can I say ... sweeeeeeeeet! Did the whole fade front to rear thing. My fronts sound crap now! I want Eclipses in the front now. Waiting for them to come in.
Only instal difficulty was me putting a tool down over my hot soldering iron and earning myself a non-permanent tatoo!

Eclipse is brilliant stuff, i have 2 Eclipse 12inch subs in my car, and I cant fault them. I was tossing up between the eclipse, and alpine s-type subs, and Eclipse were so much better....

I'd only ever get rid of them for some of the new type x alpine subs...

Are you open to other suggestions on tweeters?

I suggest you look into DynAudio Esotars or Morel Supremo's. ;)

Eclipse are good for the money but there are still much better speakers in car audio, then again the better ones also cost a better price. Eclipse should really have no hassle beatin the common Jap brands. There decks are very nice and one of the better sounding decks around.

6x9" went in the other week. Tonkins still have the eclipses on sale, 6.5" 3 way for $149, and 4" 2way for $119. Considering I have 1" domes already in the dash, would the 3 ways be wasted in the front doors? Big toss up 4" or 6.5" - any recommendations. I've heard the 4" - they sound sweet, my 6x9 sound sweet, I haven't heard the 6.5" yet.

Another thing, the bass distorts really quickly in the 6x9s (Eclipse 3 ways) - the mid and high range sound really crisp, would this just be a characteristic of the speaker, or could this be corrected somehow - eg professional install, or amping, or splitting????

I want clear sound, not distorted doof(hummm) doof(hummmm). Not interested in a sub, as I need my boot to carry things. I can get 4 bodies in there you know!

Oval cones distort earlier than round cones due to the fact that they are not symmetrical. So, yeah it's a characteristic of the speaker.

Having said that, if the speakers are rated higher than your head unit's output power (which they most certainly would be) then the signal could be distorting before it reaches the speakers, especially if you (like me) have the bass turned up a bit on the EQ section of your HU. A wise man once said that you should cut frequencies before you boost them - that just doesn't work for me. lol

Put an Amp on them. Your deck probably doesn't have enuf output power to drive the Eclipse speakers effeciently.

I have just put the Eclipse 6.5" 3 ways into the front doors. Huge improvement in sound quality over factory fitted gear. Loud? You bet. Again the high and mid range is incredibly sharp with pleanty of drive. Put some classical in and listened whilst drooling as the spanish guitar worked it's magic.

Will look at amping later to improve the base performance and drive the speakers to their best ability. A 2 chanel amp should be plenty.

Thanks all for your comments.

Here were the prices again if you're interested:
Fujitsu eclipse 3 way 6x9" - $99 (2 hours to fit cos I was a doofus)
Fujitsu Eclipse 3 way 6.5" rounds - $149 (1 hour to fit)
Prices from Tonkins Modbury (SA) - Fujitsu eclipse stuff is still on sale.

So for $250 I've improved my stage incredibly. Money well spent.

Deck is a Pioneer 4650 MP3/WMA head.
