My project car is nearly finished, got it back from exhaust shop. Tried starting it (which it did) & could see oil flying out of my exhaust! where the hell can it be leaking from??? could be stem seals i suppose but damn they must be completely gone.... im not talking about a small leak, its seriously huge

Could be the seals in the turbos?? Exactly what model is it? Hows it running, lots of black/blue smoke when it hits boost?

Blown piston perhaps? Car has 2 brand new turbos so surely it cant be them. Its a 96 second gen gto. its definitely oil so lots of white smoke i can actually see oil coming out the muffler, even at idle

Ill do a compression test to see if its the pistons

Bit of a background, i bought it of auctions, it was a roll over about a year ago, ever since its been to panel beaters, mechanics & finally exhaust place to do inter cooler piping & exhaust. So i got it towed home to do final touch ups & this is whats happening. It did blow smoke before but i just though it was coming out of damaged turbo. So i got brand new turbo kit from the states. I was going to rebuild engine with forged internals anyways but i though i would drive it for a bit until then.

Come to think about it, car was absolutely stock, with stock turbos & ecu surely it would be pretty hard to blow a piston with factory setup

Was it lying on it's side/roof at all with the engine running?

Are the turbos from someone reputable?

I would assume it was, i bought it via pickels online from Victoria

Are the turbos from someone reputable?

Well i bought the whole kit from www.3sx.com, they normally do sell quality gear. I am starting to suspect that such massive leak could only come from turbo

I would run it till it gets up to operating temp. I'd say it was in the roll over position with engie off for a while and a fair bit of oil has got past the rings into the cylinders, through into the exhaust. It will take alot of running to get the heat into the exhaust to burn it out. You could stop every 10 minutes to see if your oil level is lowering that would indicate a turbo leak.

Cheers Dave

Check your inlet manifold piping to see if it's holding any oil leaking from the turbo's or take the plugs out & crank the engine over to check / remove oil in the cylinders before trying what Dave TJ suggests. A blown piston would tend to cause rough idling / excessive pressure in the crankcase.

Cheers

yeah yeah ok cranky pants! just curious why I had not seen you on any of the normal GTO/3000GT haunts.

3sx stuff should be A-ok, wonder if something got into the turbo when shipped or if for the first bit of startup it had no oil to get it going.

I'll be keen to see what 3sx have to say, I have some 15G's I'll be moving off sometime towards the end of this year, not very helpful for you though.

Damn man, bad luck... Maybe the turbo got dropped in transit... Seen a few mad smokey turbos turn cars into puff the magic dragon when they hit boost

I'd be keen to see what he finds....binding shaft....too much shaft play....to drop THAT much oil in the exhaust for it to drip out?

I have drips come out of my exhaust when cold, but this is 99% water and 1% crap that was in the exhaust and getting carried out by the moisture.

Yea quite disappointing, i found one local seller, got a new turbo for $400, going to write one abusive email to 3sx.com, i purchased about $8k worth of parts from them in past 3 months. Going to take existing one out today to see whats wrong with it.......

Try approaching them first with the issue and see what they say, you may be surprised with the result if they are really as good as people say they actually are
