Hi all,

I've searched the threads and cannot find any that are specific to my problem

Basically my TE V6 Magna manual will not idle correctly when cold. Give it some throttle and its fine but stop at the lights or go to change gear and the engine stalls. Once its fully warmed up its all good and it idles just fine.

I've checked the ISC and it works though it may be dirty and needs a clean. Theres a procedure for adjusting the low idle speed in the Gregorys workshop manual. Unfortunately this procedure is used once the engine is up to operating temp and the car idles fine once warmed up.

As I said I searched previous threads and all the low idle speed threads weren't specific to low idle when cold.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Nigel

Carby cleaner and some MAF/contact cleaner - clean the throttle body and MAF. Check the simple stuff first. Not sure if this is the right way to do it, but its been working for me. I pull the ISC motor out before cleaning the throttle body. All the gunk from the throttle body flushes through the idle circuit of the throttle body and out.

Use some of that contact cleaner to clean up all/any electrical connections you can get to easily.

Check for any obvious vacuum leaks - manifold leaks and any of the vacuum lines leading to/from the throttle body.

Failing all of this there may be a temperature sensor that needs attention. Contact cleaner again. After that check the manual for resistance levels and check the sensors.

This may most likely be the Idle control Valve, is the part on the bottom of the TB which the coolant pipes heat up

In short, it allows more air in when cold to lift the idle and prevent stalling, as it warms up, a wax pellet causes a valve to close thus lowering the idle for warm operation. It is also there to try and get the engine up to temp faster thus lower emmisions

This was the problem with mine, last week as idling around 500rpm but now sits around 900rpm after pulling it out and giving the inside a good clean.
