View Full Version : Handbrake adjustment

Hey guys,
Got my sportswagon yesterday, and after having the wheel bearing replaced the handbrake has been adjusted a bit too tight I believe.
At less than 20km/h roughly it has a squeak once per wheel revolution. This disappears if I pull the handbrake ever so slightly (Im assuming its applying the brake enough to not squeak).
Does anyone have any step by steps for adjusting the handbrake? I have a couple of hours on my hands today so I dont mind testing it a couple of times. Pictures would be amazing!
Also, apologies if the thread has already been created. Ten minutes of searching revealed almost nothing.

Found this (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75377) with a quick search. It covers tightening but obviously you would be doing the same method just loosening it.
It may just be that the brake shoes are not centralised on the backing plate - this is usually rectified by multiple handbrake on/of sequences...also helps to drive a short distance with the handbrake on enough to give a moderate drag on the brakes...don't overheat them. Then release the handbrake and see if the noise has gone.
slightly off topic, but i asked AJ (previous owner of sportwagon) on Friday last week if he had ever had any of these noises caused by his handbrake as dads KJ wagon is having this same problem. he said never had any problem.
Anyway, today dad had the shoes replaced on the handbrake. the mechanic said that it gets filled with dust and causes the rubbing. hope this helps.

Ahh, yeah may have to get right in there and clean/maybe replace the shoes. Holding the handbrake on for a little bit while driving solves the problem for anywhere between 10 metres to 5km!
I think it may be time to just take it to my mechanic haha.
I think I might just get him to replace my front brakes with the 380 brakes I have and do everything in that order (front and back). May cost a bit but worth the safety!

That should only happen if the car has been driven with the handbrake on or the shoes have been dragging for a long time. The brake shoes should only ever come in contact with the brake drum when the car is stopped - and no wear should take place.
I recently replaced the rear discs/drums on my TL at 120,000km, and the shoes in the drum were like new...just a slight coating of road dust on the backing plate. Maybe I was lucky.
