View Full Version : Air-con fan - 3 speeds dead?

The fan for my air-con/heater/demister has stopped working on the lower 3 speeds; the fastest setting still works.

There was no warning to it, the lower 3 just stopped working.

Has anyone else had this happen? Should I just be replacing the switch or looking at another area?

Its your fan speed resistor - should be located on the passenger side under or behind the glovebox area - someone else can confirm the exact location of this.

there are 2 heater relays , one for the lower 3 speeds ( via the fan resistor ) and the other bypasses the resistor and feeds full voltage to the blower. try swapping the relays over to see if the fault moves.

edit : i just rechecked the wiring diagram , there is a small fusible link inside the fan resistor assembly . if that goes , you lose all 3 speeds.

Champions, thank you. I'll check it out tonight. :)

Damn, no good. Swapped the relays over and the result was the same, high speed only... :(

Time to visit an auto-electrician or is there something else I should be checking?

Get into your pass footwell, remove the black plastic (?) lower trim under glovebox, you will see the underside of the heater box. There is a plastic panel secured by one or two screws, with a wiring loom coming out of it and a connector nearby. The plastic plate is the heater fan resistors - there will be 3 coils of wire inside, poking into the airstream.... the coils are resistor wire which regulate the fan speed.

If you are near a self-serve wrecker, check out this part on any 3rd gens, and only buy one with all 3 coils in good looking nick obviously. Or buy replacement at Mitsi Spares. Its not a big job to swap out if yours is obviously out of commission. Just be carefull putting the replacement one in the gap of heather airbox - be careful not to damage or distort the wire cils as you manouvre it into place.

Cool, thank you Phil. I'd best PM Mal now.
