View Full Version : Long throw in brake pedal

Hey all.
Put on my front 380 brakes yesterday, and the throw in the brake pedal before it does any real braking is now quite large. (2-3 inches)

Im not a huge expert on brakes but I know that the rear pads/discs need to be done. (when I had the wheel off I could tell they were warped/worn out)

Is high wear a common cause of pedal throw? If it isnt, what have I done wrong with the front conversion?

Sorry if this has already been asked. Couldnt find anything with search.

Cheers

As above, will need to bleed your brakes cause theres some air in the lines

I know, herpa derp.
The thread is an odd number, smaller than 10mm, larger than 9mm... none of imperial fits either.. ive basically threaded the bolt! F*%K!
Any tips? :\
Is there any other way to bleed it?
I know, pretty epic fail atm.

Yeah pre' sure I threaded the bolt. Tried to bleed it from the bolt just before the line goes into the caliper, this didnt work so its off to the mechanics on monday to get the thread fixed!

Did you try to bleed it from the bolt that holds the line in the caliper, or the actual bleeding nipple?

Erm.. you do know how to bleed brakes yea?
There is a bleed nipple located on the top/bottom of the caliper that you can see when looking through the rim
You do not loosen the line then retighten it as your only moving backwards

As for the threaded bolt, I'm guessing that it just wont tighten?
Is there any brake fluid running out? Must also be a copper washer on either side of the brake line
Would get the thread retaped as you said your doing before driving on them ;)

Sorry for my grammar, im not amazing at explaining things.
I know how to bleed brakes, just didnt. sigh.

As for the bolt, its the bolt head that is threaded. The size was inbetween 9 and 10mm so when trying to use 10 it seemed right but wasnt...
Any ideas as to how to get the bolt undone?

Tried to bleed it from the bolt just before the line goes into the caliper.

If this is where you tried to bleed the brakes from then no you dont know how to bleed brakes. The bleed nipple is not between a 10mm and 9mm it is a 10mm, you are either using cheap tools that are not correctly sized or your spanner has been damaged or stretched out. If it is in fact the bleed nipple that you have damaged then get a new replacement or one from the wreckers. Probably best to get your mechanic to do repairs on your car especially when it comes to safety components like brakes suspension etc.

Cheers Luke

Using a $200 stanley socket set.
The bolt is definately between 9 and 10. Trust me =.=
I know where the bleed nipple is, I attempted to bleed it from the other bolt after I threaded the main bolt. didnt work.
Will be taking it to the mechanic tomorrow

Apologies hookup - turns out the "spanner" set in my stanley socket set are just that little bit too wide... The sockets of the same set worked perfectly! I bleeded the brakes fully (while keeping the resevoir topped up) and now it brakes amazingly.

Biggest fail of 2011 award? ^^
