View Full Version : Y pipe growl?

I've noticed a few threads about the y pipe growl/noise that is caused by a loose plate.
I have a manual Ralliart with a growl just above idle that disappears about 1100rpm.
Does anyone know if the Ralliart has the same y pipe/loose plate issue, ie same part as regular magna exhaust systems? I'd like to get it fixed but would like to know I am not persuing a dead end.
Cheers

I've been told this issue was rectified in TH or TJ onwards cars so I don't think this would be your problem.

Might be just a loose heat shield?

I didn't realise this had been fixed on the later models. I don't think it is the heat shields as Ihad them off recently to remove the water jacket drainage bolts during a coolant flush/change. They are nice and tight.
It sounds exactly the same as on my parents TF which was handed down to them from us. It started making the same noise at 140000km. It doesn't worry them.
Car runs great otherwise and I think the noise is a little better when hot but does not go away. Might get it up on some jacks at some stage and have a listen underneath.

Since when Mitsubishi fixes anything once production started? How about wave spring in the transmission? they oh i dont know had about 10 years to put tougher piece of wire, to stop tranny failing.... Back to the topic, my TJ had this issue, i cant however comment on Ralliart exhaust since its got HM headers, can any one confirm that ralliart has the same or different y piece?

Broken wave spring problem really only evident on cars with higher K's historically, therefore the problem mostly manifests itself after production of Magnas ceased in 2005.

Dude the car was being made for nearly 10 years, are you telling me that lest say by year 4 it was not evident that there was a problem? There would be plenty of cars that would push past 100,000ks in 4 years, mind you plenty of members here had boxes fail below 100,000k mark. its simple it was cheaper for Mitsubishi to let it run as is & just replace boxes that do fail which most would fail after warranty expired, instead of modifying the design.

The wave spring problem occurred in a few models of US cars, as well. Just sayin'.....
As for OP, I can't help to say whether ralliart Y-pipe was diffeernt to std exhaust or not. The noise from loose baffle in the "Y" was usually described as a "rattle" rather than a "growl" I thought.

hey i am more than curious, The growl that you guys are talking about , is it the deep noise/growl that is noticeable inside the car when very little acceleration is applied for the first time when cold ? [definitely under 1100 rpm]. I have it in mine and always have had if it is. No rattle however.
It disappears once driven normally

It is more of a deep resonance from idle to about 1100rpm when under load (taking off) with slight vibration. It feels quite harsh. As I said earlier, our old TF has had the same noise for the last 2 years. It was completely quiet before that.

When I pulled the Y-pipe off my TJ2 wreck I found the bit of metal inside the cat along with some collapsed honeycomb, definitely not resolved in any model below TL.

According to my service records, my car was sold in 2000, in 2002 at 40,000km the wave spring failed and was replaced under warranty.
