G'day,
The father in law was recently given a TF Advance Wagon, that had been sitting in a paddock for over 2 years. It has done 250xxxKm. He just got it registered and the noise started. Brother in law has found that number 5 cylinder has a bent valve (assume he has the head off) apparently no piston damage.
Questions:
1) How common is it?
2) Should they replace the bent valve only or do the whole head or part there of?.
3) What other things should they do? They want to keep it a "cheap" as possible, brother in law will do all the work.

Thanks,

Dave

Possible timing slip or belt failure failure, I would be very suspicious of other damage caused by valve contact. Definately get the whole thing check over.

Thanks Dave,
I was suspecting a "aged" timeing belt and tensioner. I think they are going to replace these as part of having the front head off. Father in law only needs it as a get me to work and bomerang me home vehicle, so is not to fussed on major work as long as it will last a couple of years. (or most of the rego period).

So should they replace the busted Valve and hope for the best or replace all or other parts??

Just drop a 2nd hand motor in it methinks... Riverside spares in Milperra sell motors with 150 thousand k's for $300, all you gotta do is swap timing belts over, drop the motor in and do an oil change, and bob's your sister!

I doubt that the damage has been done by a slipped timing belt as only the 1 valve was damaged. Could have been caused by a faulty valve spring or something may have been ingested.
I have a 2nd hand set of valves and springs (for one head only) you can have if you really want to get it done as cheap as possible, although i don't imagine valves are too expensive.
