View Full Version : starter motor relays
Hi all,
Where are the relay/relays for the starter motor.
I have had a quick look at the relay/fuses in the Black box under the hood, but can't see it.
I want to see if they are working. Tried to start car NO crank. Tried tapping Solenoid with some one turning key but no go,,,battery seems ok terminals seem ok
Thanks To all that view and reply

im not a hundred percent but if you dont have an immobiliser then it should be a direct feed from the ignition switch through the auto inhibitor switch if fitted and to the starter motor as far as my memory and wiring diagram for the tr shows.
if you have an multimeter first check if you have power to the starter motor its self when the ignition switch is turned to the start position. if not a test lamp or something similar just top test if its got feed to it. otherwise there is an inhibitor on the auto if its auto and they often go bad so try moving the auto selector around a bit. sometimes the alignment of the v=cable ect makes it so the contacts in the inhibitor switch dont like up. the switch is located under the auto gear selector cable linkage. a round box about half an inch tall with two 10mm bolts holding it on
generally the wqire for the staring circuit is a black wire with yellow stripe that runs through the left hand side loom. (i think its been a while since ive looked at tr / ts wiring)
otherwise check fusible link, ignition fuses ect. but if its a continual problem its possible one of the inhibitors has gone bad or it was also common for auto electricians to add an additional relay when the inhibitor switches weren't working right and couldn't handle the current load of the starter solenoid. this would be evident when tracing the starter wire if there were a black relay in line. ive seen 2 or 3 and heard of many more on these cars.
so ill stop bamboosling you and we will take it from there.
hope this helps.
regards jay
Thanks for the reply
Stupid Me I checked the battery a bit more and thats what it was. the night it happened I was in a hurry and only had a quick look. The battery was weird it was making the lights bright, but when under load it was not falling in a hole. I should have done the old test turn the lights on and turn key to see if the lights fail. It was during the day that I first looked at it.
Strange how the lights had so much kick ,,but yet when you turn the key NOT even a wimper.

yesterday after i bypassed my imobiliser in my first gen i went to the car park and put the electric window down then went to start the car and all of a sudden lost all power. i thought cos i got the window down i must have shorted the starting circuit and blown the fusible but that was good. so then pissed around looking at fuses ect. in the end it was just a lose positive terminal lol. spent 15 minutes only to find that lol. we have all done it.
