View Full Version : Exhaust Cracks

I have an exhaust with two cracks in it, both thick enough to fit a razor blade through, the smaller of the two is about an inch long and looks like it was caused by rubbing, the larger is around four inches long and has obvious rust around it, it seems to be weakening on the side of the pipe opposite to the crack.
I'm going to a few places later in the week to ask, but does anyone know how much it's going to cost me to fix that?
I got quoted around $350 a few years ago for a sports catback, about the same for a std. catback.

Oh wow, that sucks. Spend $200 on an exhaust and it turns up with cracks and I have to spend another $350 on repairs, I probably could have gotten a brand new exhaust for cheaper.

frist thing where on the exhaust it is . you might find some one to weld it up. i pick up a cat back to muffler from wreckers for$20.

Just get them to weld the cracks. Wont be anymore then $50. I did it 3 years ago and still going fine :) Then you can replace exhaust whenever you can afford it

It's a two-piece exhaust, the cracks are on the first piece that connects from the catalytic converter to the second piece. If I weld up the rusted piece wont it just get worse as it keeps rusting? Ah that sucks, I bought it because it was supposed to be in perfect condition and it comes with cracks, the rubber mounts are cut in half and the tailpipe is from a completely different system, just welded onto the rest of the exhaust, like they cut the rear muffler and tailpipe off of another one and welded it onto this one.

It really depends on the crack & where it is, since its after the cat, weld will actually last a while, if a crack is on the header well then welding is pretty much band aid solution as due to extreme temperatures it will continue developing.,...

I was thinking, since the end piece with the muffler and tailpipe is the most important part, that makes a difference, I might just put that on instead of the first piece, so rather than replacing the cat back, I'll just replace the muffler and tailpipe.
derp why did I read OP as "how much for a new exhaust"
Where abouts are you located? If you want a dodgy quick fix I can get some high temp liquid gasket and very thin sheet metal to wrap around it and hold the lot down with hose clamps, works ok on straight bits but no good for corners. Welding it up is possible, but if it is very thin from rust it will be a pain to weld. And if you have to start looking at replacing sections tubing with bends if its rusted through on the bent it gets even more $$ and a whole new exhaust for a bit extra is more peace of mind.
And yeh, if the mid section is rusted and the rear is fine just stick the rear on.
