Hi All,
Ive got a TE Magna and am having an issue where the battery light comes on when the RPM seems to drop below 1100RPM it doesnt all ways do it but it seems to be doing it more at the moment. if i rev the engine its fine or if driving its fine. It seems to happen mostly when i pull up at the lights etc. the battery is 2 yrs old but only just and I havent left my headlights on or anything in years. It doesnt really make a difference if AirCon is on or not. Any ideas what it could be?? ive checked the volts while driving of the cig lighter and it states 12+ volts all the time.

Car has done 185000kms and been serviced all at every point of its life and is extremely well cared for. It also had its major service last year at Mitsubishi.

what should i do?

thanks

it normally means the alternator is starting to fail, battery light means the alternator voltage is less than the battery voltage. time for an auto sparkie to investigate

darn i thought it could be but was hoping it wasnt. do you think it will be expensive to fix that etc? is it common?

dont know the costs nowadays , i guess a sparkie could recondition one for about $200 , or new ones on ebay for $300 , or try Mal at Mits-Fix to see if he has a second hand one.

they all wear out sooner or later , just another car running cost as they get a bit older.

Happened to mine, brushes on the voltage reg wore out. Replaced reg, no more issues (32,000km later).

definitely the alternator. About 150-200 bucks for a reco.......mine has done 10,000 kms no problems......it also can wear out the battery quicker if it keeps coming on(well thats whaT happened to mine)

At least spend $10 on a multimeter and check the voltage first

any recommendations who I should go see for an alternator replacement etc in VIC (eg good value service and warranty)?

Grab a regulator from your nearest wrecker. Cost me 10 bucks. Easy DIY (2 screws and a plug).

Regulator? why should i get just that and not a whole alternator? sorry kinda knew to the alternator issues etc :(

Maybe, your problem comes from worn brushes. These come with the regulator.

I agree with zaph0042, probably worn brushes - 2 screws to remove the regulator/brush assembly and then measure their length....no rocket science needed. New about $50 or lots cheaper at a wrecker. Disconnect battery first. To see how just download the free workshop manual at: http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3
