View Full Version : Wheels for RWC 1991 KR to 2003 TL
Hi Guys,
Sorry if this has been asked before, I could not find anything in the search.
I am needing to do my Roadworthy and am able to borrow a set of wheels/tyres from a 1991 KR Verada.
Would you guys know if this will fit my car, a 2003 Magna TL ES?
Your earliest response would be highly appreciated!

Almost 100% sure they will fit.
Wow, thanks so much for the quick reply Nemesis, very much appreciated. I was hoping it would as they both have 5 studs but wasn't sure about offset and all that jazz.

No worries mate - to confirm you could give Mitsfix a call. But yeah, I can't remember there being any issues with the non AWD models and 15s fitting on there.

The KR has the same front and rear pads as the TL according to the bendix site so I can only assume the brake calipers are the same in which case the wheels would clear the calipers. But like I said, could always call Mal to check.

IF the TL has the std brakes, will fit no issues at all, pop some hub caps on them and they will look factory as will they if alloys
Why do you need to change wheels, is it for bald tyres or size as your RW person should be aware about the changes to Laws allowing larger wheels provided the tyre/rim combo is within 15mm diameter, if too wide or offset wrong may also be an issue as well
Hi Madmagna,
My RWC mechanic said they where one size to big... But I am not sure if he knows...
The tyres are 235/40Z R18 95Y Falken FK452. They have travelled about 8000Km's.
The wheels are RJR Hyper Linear.
As said this is on a Magna TL ES that standard comes with 15".
Brakes are standard.
Would you happen to know if this would be roadworthy or not?

Mal is correct. Section 8 states the overall diameter of the replacement rim and tyre must not be more than 15mm greater than the largest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series.
The VRX came out with 17s. The 18s should meet the requirements no worries
Hi Nemesis,
That is correct, but, my model is a TL ES which came standard with 15". It is not a VRX. So I am not sure that would count.

It states model or vehicle series - can't see why it shouldn't count. Its how kids with VZ execs get away with putting 19in signature wheels on their cars and pass rwc.
I have the exact same size wheels on my car and have never had an issue with roadworthy.
**edit**
Show your mechanic this:
http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Tyres/SizeCalc.aspx
The difference in rolling diameter between the 205/65/R15 and 235/40/R18 is 2.3mm and is well within the permissable difference.
Ok, thanks, appreciate your replies. I will call the RWC mechanic and explain.

My bad..
Thought I saw AWD.. but it was NON AWD..

It is the overall diameter which includes the tyres and 235/40R18 is only 2mm smaller in diameter than 205/65R15. However, the big issue is the width of the rim which is only allowed to change by 25.4mm. There is also the issue of offset which affects track width and track width cannot be changed by more then 25.4mm. Last but not least, the load rating of the tyres must be at least 95 and from what you typed, they are so it leaves the rim width and effective track width in question.
Hi Vlad,
The width of the RIM is 8 inch, which is 203mm. I am not sure how wide to original RIM is that comes with the car.
edit
Just had a look on Redbook and they say Front Rim Description 15x6.0. Does this mean that the original RIM 6 inch in width is?
The current RIM on the car is 8 inch, so this is 2 inches wider. 1 inch is 25.4mm, so this means it is 50.8mm wider which exceeds the Vic roads rules of maximum 25.4mm (1 inch).
Can anyone confirm this?

You are correct.
To be honest, although they are too wide, a lot of RWC people would not really care.
Play it safe, pop on the KR wheels, get done what you need to get done and then swap back, saves paying for reinspections etc etc
