Hey guys i have only just joined the elite club of magna owners and have a question to get me going! As you can see this is my first post! (hopefully of many)

First of all. Love that car.

As stated above i have acquired a 98 Magna Solara and wanted to ask if the ignition key is electronic or a regular key?

Thanks in advance!

I believe the key has a chip in it that the Immobiliser recognises.
An RFID chip I'm guessing.

Don't quote me on that, I'm not 100% sure!

Alright sweet as! Sounds like this second key is going to cost me a little more than i planned!

I think the more important question is. Would it be too harsh if i was to quote Dingers as well?

Maybe he should be in my Signature...

Yes it has RFID so the car will try to start but not turn over even if you have a perfectly cut copy.

smartasses lol

I'm sure someone on here can give you the exact price to get a key cut and coded at a Mitsi dealer, AMC is good like that.

By the way welcome to the club.

I know there was a thread only within the last month or so that had some prices, I think it was say $150-odd. But the other thing to come out of the thread was that you can apparently open the car with a "standard" plain-cut key, so if you only need a key to get into the car but not drive it (don't ask me why you'd want that, for the kids maybe?) then it'll cost you about $20.

we were quoted approx $170+ from Penrith Mitsubishi , using our VIN number. but the guy wasnt exactly sure of the final price so havent got it done yet. there is a locksmith in Five Dock advertising on Ebay for $120 , might give him a go.

Alright cool. I'm still not sure whether i actually need a second key or not. I guess it's not a bad idea. I could spend my money worse!

Your best bet is to get a genuine key from a dealer and let them code it for you. They recode the car and any existing key you have.
This way if somebody has one of the original keys they cannot use it to start your car.
The key for a TJ was $70.00 or $90.00 this took the dealer a few days to get, coding was $40.00. That was November last year.
They did it while I waited.

The book says you need the 4 digit code that is on a metal tag that comes with a new car to code the key.....sometimes it's also written on the front page of the owners manual. I'd imagine they could trace it from the VIN, but for security you are supposed to have that 4 digit number otherwise anyone could get a key cut just by quoting the VIN from your registration sticker. In Toowoomba the dealers quoted $187 some time ago.

I just got 2 keys , and they where pre cut from Adelaide for $95 each inc GST and coding was $60 inc GST from the dealer
