Hi all, I bought a KH about 2 months ago and have always thought the motor sounds rough when reving abit, like when taking off from a standing start, I drove my old KR verada today and sounds a lot smoother, is that normal that a 3rd generation 3.5 sounds rougher then a 2nd gen 3 litre .
cheers

Not sure if this helps but my TL is pretty noisy in a mechanical way and far noisier than most other cars I've owned. This is no real problem as I actually enjoy the engine/transmission noise...especially above 3500revs. I would'nt say it's rough - actually it idles like a sewing machine...just noisy.

Kinda sounds more V8-ish compared to the old 3L, not sure if I need to do an ECU reset or something? Actually I think mines more at low revs, though I haven't really paid much attention at higher revs 'cause it actually hasn't been driven much at higher revs yet (seems to mostly sit sub-2K revs)

I had a KR Verada and I thought the KH Verada would be just a good or better, the KH has more power but the noise of the motor and or gearbox bugs me, as a newer car you always think it will be better then your old one, if I give the KH abit of a rev in netural it sounds good but in gear with a rev it sounds a little rough or chugging, sounds fine when cruising at highway speed though. The other day I was doing 60k's and put it in neutral and gave it rev to 3 grand and was ok but back in gear with a rev and it sounds noiser for some reason. I need to drive another simillar car to see if it sounds the same, plus my car over revs before going into 2nd gear, so that makes it seem worse, maybe I'm too fussy but i expected a car better then the KR ( I was very happy with it just wanted a newer car) not a worse car, the KH sure has turned me against 3rd gen Magnas, although I have wanted one for ages, maybe my KH just has some issues.

Could be the trans? I don't really like the sound of my car either. Bigger sound system or exhaust could fix it.

Good idea TiMi, I turned the stereo up yesterday and couldn't hear a thing, problem solved, LOL.

Noise on opening the throttle is quite commonly from the hydraulic lifters. A more viscous oil or an appropriate oil additive will quieten things down. Unless severe, it shouldn't be detrimental to the motor. I still remember the first time I heard my KH when blipping the throttle..much noisier than my TR 3 litre.

My noise doesn't seem to be on throttle, its only on acceleration from a stop and worse when its cold? 4sp auto.

Yes TiMi, mine is the same, does sounds worse when cold, when I rev the motor when in netural sounds good, very smooth, but put it in gear and take off and give it a little and it sounds like an old chugger, I keep backing off the throttle when I take off to get it out of first sooner as the sound shits me, I was expecting a lot more from a KH Verada, if I had picked up that it was like this when I test drove it I wouldn't have bought it, plus I have never had a car with so many rattles and squeeks, it just doesn't seem to have the quality of my old KR

Yup, ive found that if I grab at all the woodgrain bits and just about try to pull them all out of their sockets in every direction most of the squeaks go away for a little while depending on temperature changes and stuff, I guess its just different parts expanding and contracting different amounts in the cold weather. The funny transmission noise, I just put down to age and kms.

I know on the 2nd gen there were little felt pads on the bits, may be that they have just come off with lots of removals. Have only pulled off one panel on my TL so far (under steering wheel), so can't say whether 3rd gens are supposed to have the felt or not. Will cost you maybe $2 from any old cheap shop.

Cool thanks for the tip RoGuE_StreaK, I also have a creeking sound that sounds like its coming from the parcel shelf area, it comes and goes, anyone had the same problem, and know how to get rid of it?
cheers

I don't know what everyone's talking about. I find my TL to be quiet and I love the sound of the engine. However I hate how the auto drags some of the gears out too long. I think with the torque of the engine it should be able to change at lower revs. So sometimes i just use the tippy and put the same amount of throttle down as when it changes around 2700rpm - 3500 rpm and change it at 1800-2500rpm :P
