View Full Version : Magna TP 1989 Blowing coolant out of radiator
Hi there need some advise I have a magna Tp 1989 auto car. We had RAA look at it on the weekend and they advised us that the head or gasket had gone on the car as it was running rough, loud and water was flowing back through the radiator. We then replaced the head and gasket, car was still running rough and to much air was getting in some where ( to do with carbie) so we replaced the carbie and the manifold but to no avail the car seems to running okay but there is still water flowing back into the radiator. Unsure of what it is. We are on a pension and funds as very limited just need some guidance can anyone please advice us

G'day,
so first off, it seems you have had the head gasket, carby and manifold gaskets replaced?
when you say 'water flowing back through the radiator' how do you mean? is it leaking out? is it flowing into the expansion tank ( see through bottle with some level of green coolant located next to the washer bottle on the left hand front side)? or is it flowing through the system constantly?
it is possible the air has not been properly bleed from the system if it is flowing from the expansion tank as its often hard to get all the air out. my first piece of advice would be to properly bleed the system.
this is done by parking the car up a hill so the top of the radiator becomes higher then the engine. then when the engine is cool start the car up, take the rad cap off and fill the rad till it is completely full. you then squeeze the thick hoses coming from the rad to push any air out. if bubbles come up through the cap put more coolant in and repeat until there is no longer bubbles coming through. but while doing this make sure to keep clear of the radiator fans as these can start at any time. also mind the water from the radiator dosnt scauld you. likewise the exhaust as they are all close to the pipes you need to squeeze. if needed i can post a pic or two.
if the water is coming out under the left hand side of the car then it is probably being forced out the expansion tank. make sure the tank is about half way between the low and full lines when cold.
there is a few possibility but we will wait till you can give a few more details until i go into them
hope this is of some help,
regards jay
Hi there thanks for replying to this message much appreciated.More details is that if the radiator cap it off motor idlding the coolant is gushing out of the radiator through the top. We replaced all gaskets plus we actual replaced head, madiold and carbie they were second hand parts but excellent condition. Please advice pictures do help lol

if the head is good
other possible is an internal crack somewhere in the block
doesnt have to be an external crack
also check how good the water pump is

ok so when you gushing out is it accompanied with lots of bubbles / gases and more importantly does it do it from stone cold? if its only when you remove the cap when hot then thats normal as long as its only water coming out and it stops once pressure is relieved as water expands when heated . but if the flow of water has gases / air coming out with the water and it continues no matter how long you leave the cap off then ide agree with magna buff its prob a crack elsewhere other then the head.

its omly a thought but did you remove the thermastate . as it could be blocked . pumping the water out the rad. some radiater place,s wil do a cheap check for gases in the water. hope it a quick fix for you. and the above post,s are two off the best first gen guys .

Does it do this when cold or only once it has warmed up? What speed is it idling at? (normal is 800 to 1,000 rpm) With the cap off, mine will shoot coolant out through the cap hole if revved up but not at idle (proves the water pump is working, though).

as magna buff said, could be crack into one of the water jackets if everything else is fine! did u use helmar, and did u use the orginal head studs? when putting the head studs in the put oil grease on the bolts and studs as this is very important as the head studs wont be torqued down properly and head could have come loose again once heat soaked
