View Full Version : Old Battery & CEL

Hi. I charged my battery (original, about 5.5 years old) last week, and this morning when I started the car (which had not been started since last Friday), the engine just turned and turned for about 5 or 6 seconds before I decided to help kick it over myself. After this, it fired up but was very rough for a few seconds before calming down. Then I noticed the CEL was on. Driving to work, all was okay (ie no limp mode) but coming home in the afternoon - with CEL still on - I noticed engine idle appears to be a tiny bit higher and running a tiny bit rougher (can barely feel it). Plus side, I suppose, is that exhaust note is a tiny bit louder and deeper now.
I told a coworker who has a OBDII plug and phone app (which we tested a few months ago, it works), which he says can display and clear the CEL. I'll see what happens tomorrow. Otherwise I'll have to check with the dealer (or wait 4K til next service).
My guess is that forcing the engine to start has sent some junk or dirty fuel through the injectors or fuel filter or some such thing. So clearing the code probably won't do much for the rough idle, unless it settles by itself in time (otherwise its a service job).
I recall someone else (Fantasia?) had a similar struggle with their old battery, but I can't remember if a CEL popped up as a result.
EDIT: And obviously I need a new battery.
EDIT2: Went out for short spin a few hours after coming home, and idle rate appears to be normal and smooth again now.

The CEL goes out after a couple of days or a few hundred KM if the issue that caused it to come on has gone away. :)

Oh, okay. Cool thanks. That sounds like good news then.
Fingers crossed that it starts better tomorrow than it did today.

This morning the CEL was still there, and during morning tea break my friend tried to connect his OBDII bluetooth connector, but it didn't work this time (previously he had a different model which did work). And then when I drove home from work, I noticed the CEL had gone anyway. I would have liked to see what the error code was, but I'm happy it sorted itself out. So you guys were right (that the CEL would soon go away).

I have GoPoint OBDII cable and iPhone DashCommand app that is very temperamental to connect. Advice from Dash Command (app authors) is to reboot iphone and then connect without without opening any other apps. This ususally works for me.
If you pm me your email I will send the email correspondence I had with them to get to that solution!

Whenever I've had a cold start that was a bit longer than usual (car sitting) or where someone (servicing) has put their foot on the throttle when starting, I get a CEL. It's probably richer mixture down the exhaust that the O2 sensor picks up. After about 200km it goes away. This has happened about 5-6 times now.

Thanks but my current phone has no Android app support for that just about anything - my friend used his own phone and dongle. His previous one worked fine, but current one could not connect. His phone would find the device, but would instantly disconnect. We tried many times with many combinations, but no go. I'll get into it when I get a better phone.

Okay, sounds like the same thing I had then. Only second appearance of CEL for me (first time being when I ran without airbox top snorkel for 3 days, but CEL went after ignition turn off, wait, and restart).

My parents' 2007 380 SX series 3 had the same thing happen. Had been sitting for 2 weeks, upon starting it smelt rich and ran rough for a few seconds then settled. The CEL came on but cleared after ~200km of driving. All good now.
